More Than 350 Already In '07 Los Alamitos Equine Sale LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA—A yearling colt sired by noted Thoroughbred sire Grand Slam out of the blue-hen mare Check Her Twice and Quarter Horse yearlings representing the first crop of babies by young stallions Hawkish, Azoom, Brimmerton, Corona for Me, A Regal Choice, Metallic Lion and the late great The Down Side are among the many highlights of the initial list of entries to the 2007 Los Alamitos Equine Sale.
This year sale, which will be held on October 6 and 7, recently had its early consignment deadline pass with 296 Quarter Horse yearlings, 45 Quarter Horse mares, 12 horses of mixed stock and 2 recipient mares carrying embryos, one of them sired by Finding Nemo, headlining the list. The final consignment deadline is July 15 with Hall of Famer and nine-time champion breeder Ed Allred, 2006 Champion Owners Double Bar S Ranch, Francisco Gonsalez among the notable names expected to consign horses to this year s sale prior to the July 15 deadline.
Consigned by D. Wayne Lukas and Zory Kuzyk, the Grand Slam baby is named Twice As Grand. He is a half brother to last year s Los Alamitos Equine Sale topper Masters Call, who is currently undefeated in two starts at Los Alamitos. Twice As Grand is also a half brother to 2006 leading freshman sire Check Him Out, winner of the Grade 1 Ed Burke Memorial Futurity in 2001 and the Grade 1 Golden State Derby and Grade 2 PCQHRA Breeders Derby in 2002.
Grand Slam won two of New York s most prestigious juvenile fixtures, the Belmont Futurity and Champagne, and entered the Breeders Cup Juvenile as the second choice to eventual Horse of the Year Favorite Trick. As a 3-year-old, Grand Slam won the Grade 2 Peter Pan at Belmont and was second in the Breeders Cup Sprint. Grand Slam has already sired a 2003 Breeders Cup Sprint winner in Cajun Beat.
There are nine yearlings by all-time leading sire First Down Dash as of right now in the Los Alamitos Equine Sale, including a half brother to the Grade 1 stakes placed Lethal Bay. There is also a Corona Cartel filly named Moonlight Corona out of Moon Arisen, who is the dam of 2007 El Primero Del Ano Derby winner Not A Full Moon and champion Your First Moon. The red-hot Corona Cartel is also the sire of an unnamed colt out of First Down Fortune consigned by A Regal Choice Inc and a colt named Significant Corona out of champion Significant Speed consigned by Henry E. Brown. Spencer Childers consignment includes a colt named Be A Nuther Brother, who is a full brother to 2004 World Champion Be A Bono.
Check Him Out, last year s leading freshman sire, is the sire of 11 yearlings in this early list of consignments. There are seven yearlings by Feature Mr Jess, including a colt named Jessanotheraffair, who is a half-brother to recent Los Alamitos winner Devons Affair. Dutch Masters III has consigned six yearlings as of right now, including babies by A Regal Choice, Agouti, Check Him Out, TR Dasher and Stoli.

The list of first-year stallions looks outstanding. Hawkish, whom six babies at this sale represent, was the 2003 champion 2-year-old colt after winning the Grade 1 Kindergarten, Ed Burke and PCQHRA Breeders futurities. He then won the PCQHRA Breeders and Southern California derbies the following year. The unforgettable The Down Side, winner of the 2003 Champion of Champions in a 440-yard time of :21.19, has seven yearlings at this sale. There are three yearlings sired by Brimmerton, who was the champion 3-year-old cold in 2004. He won seven of 12 starts and earned $519,538 including the All American and Rainbow derbies.
The top two finishers of the 2003 Los Alamitos Million have babies at this year s sale. A Regal Choice, a full brother to Royal Quick Dash and First Sovereign who won that year s Los Alamitos Million and then competed in the Champion of Champions, has 25 yearlings. Corona for Me, a winner of $375,718 in his career, will have one yearling in the sale.
Azoom, who won 11 of 14 races in his 2-year-old campaign in 2004, has two yearlings at this sale. Azoom won the Grade 1 TQHA Sales Futurity, Texas Classic Futurity and Sam Houston Futurity on the way to over $730,000 in earnings. Metallic Lion, winner of the 2003 Governor s Cup Futurity and runner-up to Hawkish in the Kindergarten, is the sire of two yearlings on this early list of consignments. Buccaneer Beach, winner of the 2004 Los Alamitos Winter Championship and a two-time Champion of Champions finalist, has six yearlings here.
Of course, all the top stallions in Quarter Horse racing will be represented such as Separatist, Hawkinson, Fishers Dash, Mr Jess Perry, Bono Jazz, Mr Eye Opener, Streakin La Jolla and more. Up and coming young sires such as TR Dasher, EG Special Ways, Oak Tree Special, Corona Caliente, Agouti and more.
Childers consignment includes nine broodmares such as the 5-year-old winning mare named Lou De Lou, who is a full sister to 2004 World Champion Be A Bono. He also entered a pair of broodmares by Chicks Beduino to this sale. Gary Muller has also consigned four mares, EG High Desert Farms has consigned eight mares and Vessels Stallion Farms consigned three mares.
