Ford Trials On Tap Friday at Los Alamitos LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA—AUGUST 17, 2007
Fsixteen and
Wicked Royal Cartel are the only Quarter Horses to have maintained a perfect winning record from at least three starts this season at Los Alamitos.
Either
Masters Call or
LP Leading Effort could join that list when they face-off in Friday's first of four trials to the Ford Juvenile California Challenge at 350 yards. Thirty-seven freshmen sprinters will be in action in the Ford California trials with the horses having the 10 fastest times returning here for the August 31 final.
Masters Call is the biggest name in the trials, as he was the $485,000 high seller at last year's Los Alamitos Equine Sale. Owned by a partnership headed by Ed Allred and R.D. Hubbard, the full brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Check Him Out broke his maiden by a length before returning to score a nose decision over Catchmeonthebackside in a trial to the Ed Burke Million Futurity on June 9.
Marisol Ramirez's
LP Leading Effort, a gelded son of Special Leader, debuted with a 3/4-length victory against $16,000 maiden claimers before posting another 3/4 lengths win - this time against allowance rivals on June 30. Paul Jones trains Masters Call, while Joe Bassett will saddle LP Leading Effort.
John Sperry's homebred, the filly
Eyesa Perry, is one of the featured names in the second trial race. The Mr Jess Perry allowance placed runner will be facing
Anda Mija, who ran against Bikers Bono in a trial to the Governor's Cup Futurity in her last outing.
Fighter On Fire, Cash This Okie and Go By Express, a trio of Grade 1 futurity finalists, will be in action in the third trial. Fighter On Fire, the First Down Dash winner of the California Freshman Stakes, competed in the Ed Burke Million, while the other two ran in the Grade 1 Kindergarten Futurity. Cash This Okie is one to watch, as the Okey Dokey Dale gelding recently posted a smoking :11.80 drill at 220 yards.
Grade 1 finalists will also headline the final heat. Ed Burke finalist
Tres Spice, a Tres Seis filly, will face Kindergarten finalist
Perksandmiracles, a filly by Royal Miracle Dip.
