THE KINDERGARTEN BY THE NUMBERS

Below is a breakdown of how each of the finalists performed in the trials. These numbers show how fast they raced during the first 80 yards and then how fast they completed the final 220 yards. While these numbers cannot show what improvements the trialists might have made in the last two weeks, they give an indication of what the strengths of each horse might be heading into the Kindergarten Futurity.

TRIALS TRIALS FINAL

PP HORSE FIRST 80 FINAL 220 TIME

1. Fighter On Fire :05.80 :09.79 :15.59

2. Carters Cartel :05.73 :09.71 :15.44

3. Cash This Okie :05.73 :09.73 :15.46

4. Perksandmiracles :05.83 :09.76 :15.59

5. Miss Kittys Bar Bet :05.73 :09.59 :15.32

6. Shez Snow Quick :05.75 :09.79 :15.54

7. Freaky :05.79 :09.69 :15.49

8. Runs Hot :05.82 :09.71 :15.53

9. Daddy Dasher :05.79 :09.65 :15.44

10. Go By Express :05.95 :09.66 :15.61

The numbers say that Miss Kittys Bar Bet, Carters Cartel and Cash This Okie will break on top. However, the latter two both had less than perfect starts, so don't be surprised if it's one of them leading the field early in the race.

Miss Kittys Bart Bet was simply amazing from start to finish in her race, but the late kick of horses such as Daddy Dasher and Go By Express will make things very interesting if either of them can improve just a bit on their break. Freaky could be the sleeper here. He was the fourth fastest closer in the trials and the fifth quickest horse out of the gate.

SO SORRY THE COLUMNS DIDN'T SEPARATE FOR THIS BUT IT IS ON THE LOS AL WEBSITE http://www.losalamitos.com/laqhr/ AND EASIER TO READ THERE.

Since it is nearly impossible to pick the winners, I thought that doing a trifecta box might give us a better chance. Very Happy

So I'm going with:

Miss Kittys Bar Bet

Carters Cartel

and Daddy Dasher

Good luck to all with great starts and finishes...........

CARTERS CARTEL TAKES KINDERGARTEN FUTURITY

May 20, 2007 – Winning futurities runs in the family of Carters Cartel, so it was no surprise when the Corona Cartel colt won Saturday’s Grade 1, $366,100 Kindergarten Futurity at Los Alamitos.

A homebred colt racing for the List family’s Double Bar S Ranch at Moreno Valley, California, Carters Cartel covered 300 yards in :15.278 for his second victory in three starts and first stakes win. Alejandro Luna rode Carters Cartel for trainer Jaime Gomez, who has saddled the winner of the Kindergarten six times, including the last three seasons.

The second-fastest qualifier, Carters Cartel won his May 5 Kindergarten trial by 1 ½ lengths, despite lugging in early in the 300-yard sprint.

“I wasn’t worried that he lugged in,” Gomez said. “(Ranch manager Jerry Young) told me that he would do that at the ranch. He was winning so easily in his trial that he was out there on the lead all by himself.

“With no competition to run with, he lugged in,” the trainer added. “Now, in the final he had serious competition and he came out on top. That’s when you want your horse to show what he’s made of.”

Carters Cartel became the 85th stakes winner from seven crops sired by Corona Cartel, a Grade 1-winning son of Holland Ease whose 581 starters have earned more than $20.5 million and include two champions. The colt’s dam, Jumping Tac Flash, is a daughter of champion Tolltac, was American Quarter Horse racing’s champion 2-year-old filly and won the Miss Kindergarten (G2) and California Sires’ Cup (RG3) futurities at Los Alamitos in 1993.

Now 16, Jumping Tac Flash has produced eight winners from 10 starters, including three stakes winners by all-time leading sire First Down Dash – Tac It Like A Man, a First Down Dash colt who won last year’s Governor’s Cup (RG1) and PCQHRA Breeders’ (G1) futurities; stakes winner and 1998 Los Alamitos Million Futurity (G1) runner-up Flash First; and stakes winner Imjumpn.

Carters Cartel represents Double Bar S Ranch’s first Kindergarten victory.

“We’ve been dreaming about this race for so many years,” said Dawn List, who with her mother, Sharon, and sister Rhonda own the ranch. “To win a futurity this early in the year means that we’re doing something right at the farm.”

“Jaime was happy to get a sibling to Tac It Like A Man,” added Rhonda List. “After he worked him, he called us and said, ‘Girls, we have another good one.’”

The $153,762 winner’s share of the Kindergarten purse boosted Carter Cartel’s earnings to $156,837, and the colt will be pointed to the Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1) trials on June 9. His margin of victory was a neck from Daddy Dasher. Fastest qualifier Miss Kitty Bar Bet ran third and was followed by Shez Snow Quick, Go By Express, Freaky, Cash This Okie, Perksandmiracles and Fighter On Fire. Sixth-fastest qualifier Runs Hot was scratched.
