Ginnin Blaze Gives Gilbreath Fastest Qualifier To Zia Futurity

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 12, 2007—Trainer Sleepy Gilbreath has long been known for his prowess training Quarter Horses to win at the highest open level, including two All American Futurity victories, but now the veteran trainer has a very promising New Mexico-bred with Ginnin Blaze holding the fastest-qualifying time to the Grade 1, $362,977 Zia Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.

The Zia Futurity is the richest race during the stakes-filled Zia Festival program on July 29 celebrating New Mexico racing. The 10 fastest qualifiers from Thursday’s trials held on a track rated as good qualified for the finals. More than $1 million in purses will be paid to horsemen during the Zia Festival program.

Ginnin Blaze raced 400 yards in :19.601 to set the fastest-qualifying time from the 12 trials for state-bred juveniles on Thursday afternoon. The Chicks A Blazin gelding won by an expanding two lengths with G.R. Carter Jr. aboard.

Ginnin Blaze is rounding into profitable form for owners Don Mourning and Scott Pruett and could be sent off as the favorite in the Zia Futurity. In his career debut at Remington Park, he ran a lackluster fourth, but then showed speed when he finished first in the Ruidoso Quarter Horse Sale Futurity trial on June 1. However, he was disqualified from the win and now is in prime position to show that his $8,000 purchase price was a bargain. He sold in last year’s Ruidoso Select Quarter Horse Yearling Sale from the consignment of Mike Abraham.

Richard Shearer had success in the 2006 Zia Futurity when Mightys First Call finished second to Gun Battle for trainer Blane Wood and that jockey-trainer combination sent out A First Caller to finish second to Ginnin Blaze in their trial and record the second-fastest qualifying time of:19.886.

The Calligrapher colt was sent off as the 9-10 favorite in the trial after finishing third in the New Mexican Spring Futurity at Sunland Park and then winning his trial to the Ruidoso Horse Sale Futurity. He has started five times with two wins, two seconds and the futurity third-place effort.

Uncovered Regard held the top-qualifier spot after the fourth trial and that time of :19.911 held up as the third-fastest qualifying mark. The Chicks Regard gelding could be dangerous in the Zia Futurity since the trial win was his third victory from three starts and his first appearance at Ruidoso Downs. Two starts ago he won the Desert Classic Futurity at Turf Paradise.
