Jess A Classy Lassy Meets Wild Six In $625,000 Rainbow Sunday RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 20, 2007—The precocious fastest-qualifier Jess A Classy Lassy meets the undefeated West Texas Futurity winner Wild Six over 400 yards in the Grade 1, $625,000 Rainbow Futurity on Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.
First post time is 1 p.m. with free parking and free grandstand admission.
It’s the classic match-up of the rising star, Jess A Classy Lassy, against the stakes-tested proven commodity, Wild Six, in this 44th running of the Rainbow Futurity
The Ted Abrams-owned and-bred
Jess A Classy Lassy has been pointed at the Rainbow and All American futurities by Abrams and trainer Heath Taylor. She made one start this spring at Remington Park , finishing a fast-closing third in a 350-yard maiden race. That closing charge showed Abrams and Taylor that longer distances could be to the Mr Jess Perry filly’s advantage and they changed their strategy to focus entirely on the 400-yard Rainbow Futurity and the 440-yard All American Futurity.
Their plan is working with Jess A Classy Lassy making her second career start in the Rainbow Futurity trials and coming through with a nearly 3-length trial win with a :19.432 time for the 400 yards, the fastest time from 18 trials on July 6.
Four-time defending national champion jockey G.R. Carter has been the only rider Jess A Classy Lassy has known and they start from the third post position.
A $32,000 purchase at the Ruidoso Select Quarter Horse Yearling Sale just 11 months ago,
Wild Six is undefeated from four starts, has earned $145,003 and won the Grade 1, $266,000 West Texas Futurity.
In the West Texas Futurity, Wild Six’s third start, she powered down the outside of the Sunland Park straightaway to win the West Texas Futurity by an expanding half length. The Wes Giles-trained Tres Seis filly raced the 300 yards in an excellent :14.95.
Wild Six made her next start in the Rainbow Futurity trials and she took command early in the trial and was never threatened while winning by a half length in :19.478, the third-fastest qualifying time.
Wild Six has the sixth post position and regular rider Tony Guymon is aboard.
Three Past Six also brings stakes credentials into the Rainbow Futurity. The bargain $8,000 Tres Seis filly purchased at the Ruidoso Select Quarter Horse Yearling Sale was third in the Grade 1, $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity and then finished second to Wild Six in their Rainbow Futurity trial.
Freddie Martinez will pilot Three Past Six with the eighth post position.
Second-fastest qualifier
Early Morning Bite broke his maiden in his Rainbow Futurity trial when he won by two lengths in :19.468. The James McArthur-trained Fishers Dash gelding finished sixth in the Ruidoso Futurity two starts ago.
Early Morning Bite has the outside post position in the 10-horse field with Sam Thompson riding.
