DELTA DOWNS RACETRACK CASINO & HOTEL—June 13, 2007—Race fans have plenty of action to look forward to this week at Delta Downs as the track will host two days of important trials on Thursday and Friday before contesting three big stakes races over the weekend. Delta will conduct its ninth week of American Quarter Horse racing between Thursday, June 14 and Sunday, June 17. The current season spans 52 days and wraps up on July 15. Post time each night is at 6:30 p.m.
On Thursday the Grade II $230,150 Firecracker Futurity trials will take place. The Firecracker Futurity is a 2-year-old stakes race that is run at 350 yards. On Friday the Grade II $92,800 Firecracker Derby trials will be featured activity.
The Firecracker Derby is for 3-year-olds competing at 400 yards. The finals for both races will be held on Sunday, July 1.
This Saturday’s action will include the restricted Grade I $161,250 Delta Downs Derby for 3-year-olds traveling 400 yards. Qualifying trials for the big race were held at the track on May 31 with Frank Cavozos and Warren King’s Heza Jodys Toast recording the fastest time. Heza Jodys Toast will be going for his fourth win of the season and second stakes score after capturing the Louisiana Graduation Stakes on May 12.
The restricted Grade III Mr Jess Perry Stakes will also be held at Delta Downs on Saturday night. The $40,000 showdown for older Louisiana-bred horses attracted 23 nominations including Candy Villareal’s veteran performer Angelas Toast, who has won nine races in a row including victories in this year’s John Alleman Memorial and Bank of America East Championship Challenge at Delta Downs earlier this year. Saturday’s program will also include the $15,000 Alabama Juvenile Stakes for 2-year-old Alabama-bred runners.
Major Dates Yet To Come There are two major race dates remaining in this year’s Quarter Horse Meeting at Delta Downs. They are Sunday, July 1 and Saturday July 14. On Sunday, July 1 Delta Downs will feature this year’s Firecracker Futurity and Firecracker Derby, two of the most important Quarter Horse races in the country each year.
And on closing weekend of the season, Saturday, July 14, Delta Downs will host Louisiana Showcase Night, featuring seven stakes races for horses bred right here in Louisiana. The top offering on Louisiana Showcase Night is the Grade I Lee Berwick Futurity, named in honor of the man who built Delta Downs in 1973.
Jockey And Trainer Standings Alfonso Lujan notched four more victories last week to bring his season leading total up to 42. Lujan has also accumulated the most mount earnings of any jockey in the local colony with $574,678. Following Lujan in the standings as this week’s action gets underway are Danny Lavergne (32 wins), Gilbert Ortiz (28), J. R. Ramirez (27), and Orlando Baldillez (25). M. Heath Taylor continues to show the way in the trainer standings with a total of 20 wins on the meet. Taylor’s runners have amassed total earnings of $438,607. Rounding out the top six conditioners as this week starts are Kenneth L. Roberts, Sr. (18), Ray Robbins (16), Danny Joe Eldridge (14), Janet Van Bebber (14), and Joseph Manucy (14). | |

| Log on to the Delta Downs website, click on racing information, watch the races by live big screen video and if you miss them they have replays. I think all racetracks should provide this service for their racing fans and we wouldn't be hopping all over the internet looking for live racing at our favorite tracks. | |
