My Buddie, Bikers Bono Sparkle In Wins

My Buddie posts unheard of 4-1/4-length
win in maiden start at 350 yards.

LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA—The stallion Bono Jazz enjoyed a super night Thursday night, as a pair of 2-year-old geldings that he sired named My Buddie and Bikers Bono sparkled in separate Quarter Horse races at Los Alamitos.
Ed Allred's My Buddie posted one of the most impressive maiden wins in track history, as he blew away eight rivals by an unheard of 4-1/4-lengths at 350 yards under jockey Jeff Williams. The homebred chestnut gelding was making his first career start after a rapid 220-yard drill in :12.00 flat on May 29.

"That's the best effort by one of my first time starters in a long time," said Allred while sitting at his table in the Vessels Club with good friend Billy Smith and trainer Cody Joiner. "My only other horses that debuted this impressively were Coca's Kid, who ended up as the 8-5 favorite before finishing third in the (1973) All American Futurity, (AQHA Champion) Waymaker and Go Proudly, who I thought was unbelievable in her debut."

Sired by Kicapu Kid, Coca's Kid won eight races from 12 starts. She won the Bay Meadows Futurity and ran second in the Bay Meadows Futurity. Coca's Kid was the dam of three foals including Kidlet, who produced 12-time winner Childish, and Childlike, Kid Raiser and La Rey Kid, who all went on to produce stakes level runners of their own.

Out of great broodmare Separate Ways, Waymaker won nine races and $617,444 on the way to being named champion 2-year-old gelding. He won the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity, Grade 1 Golden State Futurity and the Restricted Grade 1 Governor's Cup Futurity. He is also the brother of champion Separatist and stakes winner Make It Anywhere. Go Proudly, a 1980 foal, by Sir Rambler out of nine-time AQHA Champion Charger Bar, won five races in 12 starts on the way to earning $199,638.

After being compared to three outstanding runners like Coca's Kid, Waymaker and Go Proudly, all eyes will be on My Buddie when he makes his next start.

"He's eligible to the Governor's Cup Futurity but that's about it," Allred said. "The trials are on July 13. It's quick but it looked like he came back great. I've already had a lot of phone calls from all over the country about this horse. We'll see what we do with him. He's probably the best horse I've had in a long, long time."

Cody Joiner, who runs the Los Alamitos barn for his father, trainer Mike Joiner, has been impressed with this horse from day one.

"After his first workout I started calling him 'Freak' because he was so fast," Joiner said. "When I worked him the second time, G.R. Carter was on him. He said, 'Let me see what all this hoopla is about. Let's see what he's go.' I asked G.R. what he thought about him when he came back and he thought he was really, really nice. That's when I started calling this horse the 'Super freak'."

My Buddie is out of the 7-year-old broodmare Female Friend, a winner of three races and $31,321 at Los Alamitos. She ran in the Governor's Cup and La Primera del Ano derbies. She was repurchased for $30,000 at last year's Los Alamitos Equine Sale.

About an hour after My Buddie's huge debut, Jane Rosenberg, Charles Treece and et al's Bikers Bono improved his record to two wins from as many starts after a 3/4 length victory over Tell Em Belle in a 300-yard time of :15.321. Bikers Bono, who is an altered son of Bono Jazz, was purchased for $15,000 from breeder Spencer Childers at the last year's Los Alamitos Equine Sale. He's now going to be pointed to the Governor's Cup Futurity trials on July 13.

"He's owned by 15 people and that's what makes all of this so much fun," Rosenberg said. "We had a group of 30 people out here for this race and we were all hollering when he won. He improved a lot from his first start (:15.59 clocking on May 20). He needed to step up his game because he was facing winners."

Alejandro Luna piloted the first foal out of the mare Biker Babe.
