| Yea he looked pretty snazzy on the computer screen the way he came running at the end. Kinda surprised the announcer also. I've been watching him since he ran in the Heritage Place trials last year. Maybe if he wins this derby, they'll take him to the Rainbow trials in July. | |

| Ya that 40 mph tail wind blew 3 maidens into the finals from the 9th trial. A few people are mad, but that's the way it goes I guess. It went from a head wind in the first 8 trials to a big tail wind for the 9th on. | |

It is silly to be mad just dang weather...the finals should be REALLY interesting to watch...hehe...half of the horses way up there and the other half way back OR everyone running like it is a BIG BAD FUTURITY! We're entering one for Saturday (opt claiming)...so we'll be down there then!

FUTURITY WINNERS MEET AT RETAMA June 14, 2007 – Futurity winners Swingin Jess and Eyesa Jumpn may not be atop the qualifiers’ list but they have the proven stakes records coming into the $283,770 Retama Park Futurity (G1) on Sunday.
Owned by Keilani Farms, Swingin Jess (Mr Jess Perry-Swingin Otoole by Jody O Toole) has been very productive for trainer Heath Taylor with a win in the Grade 1 Manor Downs Futurity and a daylight victory in his Retama Park Futurity trial.
In the Manor Downs Futurity two starts ago, Swingin Jess pulled away in the last half of the 350-yard dash to win by three-quarters of a length in :17.93. The colt maintained his sharp form with a 1 ¼ -length win in his Retama Park Futurity trial in :17.60 for 350 yards.
The Eusevio Huitron-owned and -trained Eyesa Jumpn (Eyesa Special-Jump Jive An Wail by Holland Ease) has been a tested filly with six starts, highlighted by a win in the Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity (G2) and a second in the Ford Texas Juvenile Challenge (G3). In the Harrahs Futurity, she scored an 11-1 upset with a half-length tally in :15.30 for 300 yards. Eyesa Jumpn won her Retama Futurity trial by one length as the 1-9 favorite in :17.653, the seventh-fastest qualifying time.
Leading the qualifiers from 12 trials is Pretty Special Perry (Pretty Boy Perry-Angies Super Effort by Special Effort), who won by a nose margin over second-fastest qualifier Illegal Memories (Illegal Runaway-Good Ole Memories by Leaving Memories). Pretty Special Perry was timed in :17.489 with Illegal Memories checking in with a :17.505 time. Genaro Cano’s Pretty Special Perry, trained by Victoria Cano, broke her maiden with the trial win while Illegal Memories, owned by Tim Lange and Charlie Forbes, is still a maiden with two seconds from two career starts.

HICLASS LA JOLLA HEADS DERBY
June 14, 2007 – Robert and Karen Nunnally’s Hiclass La Jolla is the horse to beat in Saturday’s $120,000 Retama Park Derby (G2) based on his ultra-consistent record of six wins and a pair of seconds from nine starts. Hiclass La Jolla (Streakin La Jolla-Hiclass Cloned by Royal Quick Dash) won last year’s $150,000 All American Juvenile by a half length in :21.44 for the 440 yards. He also won the Gold Cup Futurity and the Heritage Place Juvenile during his impressive freshman campaign for trainer David Haas. After a rest of more than seven months, Hiclass La Jolla returned to action in the Retama Derby trials and showed his readiness with a length win in :19.905, the third-fastest qualifying time.
Javier Marquez’s A Special Stoli (Stoli-Special Lady Ryon by Ronas Ryon) won his trial by three-quarters of a length in :19.850 to lead the qualifiers from four trials. That win pushed the Alex Villarreal-trained colt’s record to three wins from four 2007 starts.
A Special Stoli raced to his most important victory when he was a neck winner of the Longhorn Derby (G2) at 40-1 odds over Retama Park track-record holder Zoomin For Bux, winner of the 2006 Retama Park Futurity.
Sergio Garza’s Beaukas (Make It Anywhere-Beauclare by Coup De Kas (TB)) is a hard-knocking filly for trainer Brian Stroud who could break through with a graded stakes win in the Retama Park Derby. She has raced in three graded stakes with a third behind Zoomin For Bux in the Retama Park Futurity.

SWINGIN JESS WINS RETAMA PARK FUTURITY
June 17, 2007 – Swingin Jess overcame a slow start to win Sunday’s 350-yard, $283,770 Retama Park Futurity (G1), as the track near San Antonio concluded its spring American Quarter Horse meet.
Racing for Glenn Collins’ Keilani Farms of College Station, Texas, Swingin Jess covered the distance in :17.570 to earn a lifetime-best 104 speed index and post the second-fastest 350-yard winning time in the history of the stakes. Trainer Heath Taylor gave a leg up to jockey Gilbert Ortiz.
“My heart stopped at the break when he spotted the field at least a length,” said Taylor. “With this kind of company, it’s difficult to make up ground.”
Swingin Jess was bred by Linda Alumbaugh’s MLA International Company of Stigler, Oklahoma, and the colt is one of 71 stakes winners from nine crops sired by Mr Jess Perry, a Grade 1-winning son of Streakin La Jolla and the sport’s champion 2-year-old in 2004. Bred by Jesse Perry of Alexandria, Louisiana, Mr Jess Perry is owned by a syndicate and stands at Four Sixes Ranch at Guthrie, Texas.
Swingin Jess’ dam, Swingin Otoole, is a daughter of the Jodys Glory stallion Jody O Toole who won the 1998 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity (RG2) at Sam Houston Race Park. A half sister to ’96 Rainbow Futurity (G1) winner Swingin Val, the 11-year-old mare has foaled two winners from three starters.
The $113,508 winner’s share of the Retama Park Futurity purse increased Swingin Jess’ earnings to $263,708. Collins said he paid $280,000 for Swingin Jess after the colt won the April 22 Manor Downs Futurity.
“This is our first big win, and we’re thrilled,” said Collins.
Swingin Jess’ margin of victory was three-quarters of a length from Pretty Special Perry. Witchs Streak ran third and was followed by Illegal Memories, Getting The Cash, Painkiller, Eyesa Jumpn, Dress Me Anywhere, Special Willie and Eye Am Dashing.
