I see that they have 16 trials, with 160 head total in the futurity trials for Friday's opening day at Ruidoso for the Ruidoso Futurity... Is anyone planning on going?? I'm stuck out in CA, and I'm hoping they will be showing them on TVG so I don't have to watch them on the computer all day... They start at 11:30 mtn time....

Hey ljb, where do you watch the races on the computer if they're not being shown on TVG? I just checked the TVG schedule and they don't have Friday's racing up yet, maybe tomorrow as Thursday's is already posted. Delta Downs is the only track I know of that provides live video for their fans. Sure would be nice if all tracks did that so you wouldn't be blackmailed into betting by the account wagering sites just so you can watch the races. Very Happy

I am hoping they will be on TVG, if i remember right last year they showed them. If not I am hoping that I am able to get Los Alamitos to bring in the feed for viewing purposes only (since they have a limit on how many races they can bring in for betting) and then we can at least watch them. If not, I will be on youbet.com watching them all day. You can get a 60 free trial on there and you can watch them for free if you need somewhere...

Oh Darn ljb, I already used up my youbet free trial last year. Was hoping you had found somewhere else. ESPN has free live video at http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/index, click on live racing and go from there but I don't know if they'll be carrying Ruidoso....just have to wait until Friday. I just checked TVG and their schedule still isn't up for Friday. I caught part of an ad this weekend about Ruidoso but didn't hear if they were televising the trials............... confused

Thanks for the info 9coronas. I'll add it to my list of freebie places to watch qh racing. Youbet.net will let you watch for one hour a day after you join and play their game and that covers all tracks also. I just watch the race and then log off until the next race comes up so the hour doesn't get used up so fast. I'm just hoping TVG is covering the trials and their info isn't up yet. Does your name mean you have 9 Corona Cartel babies or is it a reference to a certain liquid refreshment? Wink

HEY KIDD: There's no such thing as a horse free weekend. cheers

It's only Fridays and Saturdays and some Sundays from here until Labor Day. Time off will be granted for your wedding and honeymoon of course. king cake queen yeah

I've almost got all that pedigree info together that I wanted your opinion on but maybe I should wait until after the wedding. You did say it's in June??

Good luck and great safe starts for all..... sunny

TVG has posted that Ruidoso trials 1-6 will be televised and unless they schedule some more I guess we'll all be watching on Youbet or wherever else we can find them. They start at 1:30 EDT. Ruidoso is an exclusive track for TVG so you would think they'd show them all. scratch

I do feel a LITTLE bad since we're going to miss one of our guys running in the MBNA Derby trials at Sam Houston on 6/29...oh well though, garrett has another trainer saddling for him and if he can get qualified garrett can saddle in the finals... cheering Here is to hoping!!!

Hi ljb: I just checked the TVG schedule and they are now covering all the trials on tv. You're right, they may be recorded but better than nothing. Here's the weather forecast: Blast and darnit, probably going to be rainy, muddy with a little wind. Nothing unusual for Ruidoso.......

Friday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon. Partly cloudy, with a high near 72. Calm wind becoming south between 5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Even with 'weather' it's always exciting, race thanks for checking. Do you work at Los Al? sunny

No I don't work there, we run horses there. So I have gotten to know everyone around there. This will be the first time in years that I will not be at the trials tomorrow, so its kind of sad... Sad .... but at least I have a way to watch them. As for the weather, they can never forcast Ruidoso correctly, if they say its gonna rain it probably won't, if they say its gonna be blue sky its gonna downpour...lol...

ljb: you were right on about the weather. I did hear that they had a giant hail storm right after the last trial. I didn't get to see all the trials as my hay man decided to deliver early and then my youngest mare decided to colic and of course it ended up being after hours at the emergency call rate. Oh well, it's only money and she is fine now and that's all that matters. Let me know when you have a horse going at Los Al so I can exercise my lungs and root him or her home. sunny

my parents sent me pictures of the hail from when they were at dinner, and they said it looked like snow covered the ground for a little bit there was so much of it. I was also told that it started to rain for the last trial, thats why the track got faster and a horse was able to qualify. We have a horse in tonight in the Town Policy Hndcp, but I'm not sure if she has much of a chance. We will have better chances when we get to run our 2 yr olds in the Ed Burke trials on the 9th.... I'm glad to hear that your mare is doing good. I hate it when they get sick and there isn't much you can do...its the worse feeling...

Hi ljb: If your horse was Single Sadie. you should be really upset. From what I could see, she was squeezed out by Another Cartel coming over into her and had to pull up sharply and lost all chance. Why wouldn't the stewards have placed her higher than last as it looked as if she was coming on until she got interferred with. It had all the potential of being a really, really bad wreck. I think the comments got transposed on the charts also. Sorry you didn't have a better night. My mare is a stinker about drinking enough water at times for whatever reason and so naturally she gets dried out with usually a soft impaction. She hasn't done this, that I know of, for several years. So I just have to feed 4 times a day and sit and watch. After she gets enough hay in I fix her a bucketful or two of Countrytime lemonade and if she doesn't drink all of it, I put some of the powder in my hand and she licks it off and pretty soon she's over at the water tank trying to get her tongue unglued from her teeth, HA ! Kinda like peanut butter in the roof of your mouth thingy.

I did get to watch the Derby trials today and was really surprised that Remember Me Rose didn't do better but at least she qualified. Oh well, onward and upward to the Ed Burke and better luck. How many babies will you have in the trials? sunny

The filly is one of seven winners from 10 starters foaled by her winning dam, and she is a half sister to Grade 1 winner Vital Time and Grade 3 winner Racing Winner. "She had a chip earlier in her career, so we gave her time," said trainer Paul Jones of La Lalique. "You have to wait on some of them and give them a chance."

*Screamin Bye came from off of the pace to win heat 3 by a neck from 11-10 favorite and Grade 2-placed Call It Anywhere. The Utah-bred gelding was a finalist in last year's Grade 1 Rainbow Futurity, and he is one of four starters foaled by his dam, who won the 2000 Utah Classic Futurity (RG2).

*A 14-1 longshot, Heavenly Trip won the second trial by a head from Twoforthedough. A homebred filly and finalist in last year's Ruidoso Futurity (G1), she is one of two starters produced by her Grade 3-winning dam.

Heartswideopen Fastest Qualifying Mark To Ruidoso Futurity

Heartswideopen wins the first trial in by three
lengths to post the fastest time.
Photo by Bill Pitt, Jr.RUIDOSO DOWNS RACE TRACK AND CASINO—May 25, 2007—Javier Rodriguez’s Heartswideopen won the first of 16 trials to the Grade 1, $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity on Friday afternoon and her :17.335 time for the 350 yards held up as the quickest time from 16 trials.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from the 154 2-year-olds who raced in the trials return for the Ruidoso Futurity, the first leg of the All American Triple Crown series at Ruidoso Downs, on June 10. Completing the Triple Crown are the Grade 1, $625,000 Rainbow Futurity (July 22) and the Grade 1, $2 million All American Futurity (Sept. 3). If any horse can sweep the three futurities then the horse’s connections will receive a $4 million bonus.

Heartswideopen made a stunning rebound in her trial after finishing sixth as the 4-5 favorite in the Grade 1, $266,000 West Texas Futurity at Sunland Park on April 22. In her Ruidoso Futurity trial she quickly took command from the second post position under regular rider Oscar Hernandez. The sleek dark filly then pulled away to a 3-length victory.

“She ran a perfect race,” said trainer Carl Draper, leading Quarter Horse trainer at Sunland Park this winter. “I wasn’t worried after the futurity. I don’t get worried; I just give my horses the care they deserve. “We’ve just been giving her tender loving care. All my horses love carrots and she’s been eating her carrots every day.”

Heartswideopen impacted the juvenile division in her first start when she won her maiden race on March 9 by one length. Her 300-yard time of :15.21 held up as the fastest time by a 2-year-old at Sunland Park until the West Texas Futurity trials. In those April 6 trials, Heartswideopen surpassed that time with a :15.12 fastest-qualifying win by one and a quarter lengths.

A daughter of Feature Mr Jess and champion and champion producer Dashing Phoebe, Heartswideopen has the breeding to be a major futurity winner at Ruidoso Downs. Her dam, Dashing Phoebe, won the Kansas (now Ruidoso) Futurity and the Rainbow Futurity.

Second-fastest qualifier Racing Streak, owned by Jerry Windham and trained by James McArthur, raised her record to two wins from two starts with her victory in :17.511. The Streakin Sixes filly won her career debut at Manor Downs by more than two lengths.

The only qualifier from the two $15,000 supplemental nominees was second-race winner XO Kate, timed in :17.569. The Stoli filly has two wins from four starts and qualified for the Grade 1 Remington Park Futurity.

A disappointment in the trials was West Texas Futurity winner Wild Six. She flipped in the starting gate prior to the 11th trial and was scratched.

The complete list of qualifiers, times, owners, breeders, trainers and jockeys click here.

Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Casino is located in Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico and is the host site for the All American Futurity. Live racing runs annually from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Adjacent to the race track is the Billy the Kid Casino, which opened in April of 1999 and houses over 300 slot machines.

La Lalique Sets Fastest Time To $220,000 Ruidoso Derby

RUIDOSO DOWNS RACE TRACK AND CASINO (May 26, 2007)—Patience has paid off for La Lalique with a fastest-qualifying victory in the first of three trials to the Grade 1, $220,000 Ruidoso Derby on Saturday afternoon.
Owned by R.D. Hubbard, DWF Inc. and Johnny Jones, La Lalique raced the 400 yards in :19.552 for her third win from seven career starts. Freddie Martinez was aboard for the victory.

“She had a chip early in her career so we gave her time,” said co-owner Jones. “You have to wait on some of them and give them a chance.”

La Lalique, a $100,000 yearling purchase at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, only started four times as a juvenile and raced to a maiden win at Los Alamitos for her sole 2-year-old victory. The Corona Cartel filly was then operated on to remove the chip and returned to action in March at Los Alamitos. She had a win and a close second in her two starts at Los Alamitos before shipping to Ruidoso Downs for the Ruidoso Derby trials.

In her derby trial, she prevailed by a neck over second-fastest qualifier One Perfect Storm, who recorded a :19.606 time. Ray Herring’s homebred One Perfect Storm, an altered son of Royal Evening Snow, has one win from 13 career starts for trainer Roy Marcom.

La Lalique was one of three qualifiers for the stable of five-time defending national training champion Paul Jones. He also saddled qualifiers Twoforthedough, by First Down Dash, and Already Rude by Stoli.

Screamin Bye, a son of Dashin Bye who was the fastest qualifier to last year's $625,000 Rainbow Futurity won the final trial in :19.841 for the third fastest time.

Two of the favorites coming into the derby trials, Saint Shackleton and Remember Me Rose, barely made the derby field. The two horses each raced in the second trial and finished third and fourth, respectively. Their times were the ninth- and 10th-fastest times.

Saint Shackleton, a son of Check Him Out, finished in a dead heat for the win in last year’s Grade 1, $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity while Remember Me Rose, by Corona Cartel, was second in the Grade 1, $625,000 Rainbow Futurity as the favorite.

Yes that was our horse... I am glad that I had to leave town and wasn't able to be there for the race... I would have had a fit with. Our jockey just about fell off, and then she got a dirt clump in her eye and that is when she threw her head and dropped way back. Another Cartel has "broke in" or "lugged in" in every race he has ran, you think the trainer/jockey (both the same) would have done something about it, maybe getting taken down will do something. I know there was some heated arguments in the jocks room after the race, becauase that jockey was trying to blame every other horse/jockey in the race for him wipping his own horse over the right ear repetedly... i just feel sorry for our horse, because she was running all she could and could have won or ran second had she not gotten impeded along the way. All i can say is better luck next time...

As of right now I think we have 8 going into the trials, 7 of them have a shot at qualifying. 3 are coming off of maiden victories and the others have not ran worse than 3rd i think... We did have one get ran over, a corona cartel colt that should be really tough in the trials, and he'll probably have high odds. So we'll see how it all goes in a 10 days or so..
