2009 Los Alamitos Super Derby To Have $1,000,000 Guaranteed Purse LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA—SEPTEMBER 30, 2007— Since its inaugural running in 1954 the Los Alamitos Super Derby has maintained its position as the sport's most prestigious 3-year-old stakes.
With a list of past winners that includes Pap, Jet Deck, Goetta, Go Joise Go, Kaweah Bar, Charger Bar, Dash For Cash, Town Policy, Sgt Pepper Feature, Dashs Dream, First Down Dash and last year's World Champion Wave Carver, the Los Alamitos Super Derby has earned its own chapter in Quarter Horse racing history.
Now the Los Alamitos Super Derby is set to make history once again with the announcement that starting in 2009 the Grade 1 stakes will offer a guaranteed purse of $1,000,00, making this race not only the richest derby in the sport, but also the first derby to offer a $1,000,000 guaranteed purse. To be contested at 400 yards, the Los Alamitos Super Derby now features $300,000 in added money and the projected purse for the 2009 running is $1,250,000.
The 2009 Los Alamitos Super Derby is not tied to any particular futurity, but it will join four other Los Alamitos stakes in the $1,000,000 club. In addition to the 2009 Los Alamitos Super, Los Alamitos Race Course hosts the $1,000,000 guaranteed Ed Burke Million Futurity, the $1,000,000 guaranteed Golden State Million Futurity, the $2,000,000 guaranteed Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, and the $1,000,000 guaranteed Champion of Champions. The "Deuce" is Quarter Horse racing's only $2,000,000 guaranteed race and the Champion of Champions is the sport's only $1,000,000 guaranteed race for older horses. The winner of the 2009 Los Alamitos Super Derby will receive a berth in the finals of the Champion of Champions.
The 2009 Los Alamitos Super Derby will be run in November at a distance of 400 yards. The 10 fastest qualifiers on trial night will earn a spot in the finals of the race, while the next 10 fastest qualifiers will earn a spot in the Grade 3 $35,000 Town Policy Handicap, a 3-year-old stakes race which will also be contested on Los Alamitos Super Derby night. Based on recent trial entry numbers the Los Alamitos Super Derby projects to be the best opportunity for any owner and breeder to have a runner compete in a $1,000,000 stakes.
