Trial Notes: Fantasies Royal won the first of two trials by 1-1/4 lengths over Dazzadeck to post the fastest qualifying time.
Fantasies Royal Leads Qualifiers To Bayer Legend Derby at Ruidoso
RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—MAY 31, 2007—Jim and Marilyn Helzer’s Fantasies Royal was strong in the last half of his 400-yard Bayer Legend New Mexico Derby trial to set the fastest qualifying from the two trials.
The horses with the 10 fastest times return for the finals on June 17. The winner of the derby qualifies for the $150,000 Bayer Legend Derby Challenge at Los Alamitos Race Course in Southern California in November.
Racing out of the Sleepy Gilbreath stable and ridden by Joel Aranda,the son of This Snow Is Royal covered the 400 yards in :19.753 while facing a head wind.
Fantasies Royal is stakes-tested, having qualified for three Grade 1 futurities last year in Oklahoma and Texas. His best effort was a fourth-place finish in the $1 million Texas Classic Futurity.

Earlier on Thursday’s program, Playingwithchimes and One Bad Ghost won the two trials to the Ruidoso Thoroughbred Sales Futurity. The Thoroughbred qualifying format has the top five finishers in each trial advancing to the June 16 finals worth $102,070.
Playingwithchimes won the first trial by three quarters of a length with a :59 time for the five furlongs. He rallied from a stalking position to gain his second win from three career starts.
Also qualifying from that trial were Danseur First, Grizzly Band, MGBA Kissin Silver and Comfy Lead.
In the second Thoroughbred trial, One Bad Ghost held off a game Artic Storm Cloud. Also qualifying were Roseamongthethorn, Blazing Band and Satellite Sal.
One Bad Ghost won by a half length in :58 4/5 for five furlongs. He was making his career debut after running a best-of-the-morning 5-furlong work on May 10 at Ruidoso Downs.
