$50,000 Sam Houston Classic Heads Weekend of Racing
HOUSTON, TX—AUGUST 28, 2007—Sam Houston Race Park will host an extended weekend of live American Quarter Horse racing with programs set for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and a special Labor Day race card on Monday, September 3 at 1:30 p.m.
Friday night’s card will be highlighted by the running of the $50,000 Sam Houston Classic (G2) with stakes winners, Gray Invasion, Automatically and St. Pat’s First among the horses entered. Distance runners will be featured in Saturday’s $35,000 Governors’ Cup Marathon.
Admission to the northwest Houston racetrack is $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for senior citizens and children 12 and under are free.
Labor Day Activities at Sam Houston Race Park
Sam Houston Race Park will present a special live racing card on Labor Day, Monday, September 3. The first race will take place at 1:30 p.m.
Sam Houston Race Park will also simulcast the $2,000,000 All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. Two of the leading trainers at Sam Houston Race Park , Heath Taylor and John Buchanan have horses running in the prestigious race. Buchanan will saddle Coronas Fast Dash, the fourth fastest qualifier and Taylor had the fifth fastest qualifier, Captain Courage.
There are many concession stands throughout the Grandstand featuring barbeque, hamburgers, pizza, made to order pasta and $1 Hot Dogs as a Labor Day special. The Winner’s Circle Restaurant offers a prime view of the horse track, a private television monitor and easy access to mutuel clerks for wagering.
Children are welcome and Sam Houston Race Park will offer kids activities and free pictures with the popular miniature donkeys, Chip and Dip.
Trainers Heath Taylor and John Buchanan Have Runners
In the All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs
American Quarter Horse racing’s richest race, the $2 million All American Futurity will take place on Labor Day at Ruidoso Downs. Two Sam Houston Race Park trainers, John Buchanan and Heath Taylor will each saddle a finalist. Buchanan trains Coronas Fast Dash for owner Bobby Cox and Taylor hopes for a victory with Captain Courage, who was the fifth-fastest qualifier in trials run on August 16.
Buchanan won the prestigious race in 1987 with Elans Special; this would be the first All American win for Taylor.
The Ruidoso Downs program gets underway at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 3 with post time for the All American set for 5:50 p.m. (CDT).
