LP Leading Effort Looks to Remain Unbeaten in Ford Juvenile Winner of Friday's Feature at Los Alamitos Will Qualify For Bank of America Racing Challenge Championship
By JONATHAN HOROWITZ
LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA—AUGUST 29, 2007—Marisol Ramirez' LP Leading Effort could have been claimed for $16,000 in his debut at Los Alamitos Race Course on June 2. Less than three months later, the Joe Bassett-trained 2-year-old gelding will enter the starting gates as the fastest qualifier for Friday's $45,990 Grade 3 Ford Juvenile California Region Challenge.
The winner of Friday's 350-yard feature race will earn a berth to the $150,000 Grade 2 Ford Juvenile Challenge Championship to be run at Los Alamitos Race Course on November 3 as part of AQHA's Bank of America Racing Challenge.
LP Leading Effort, a Utah-bred son of sire Special Leader and dam Aeronautigals Effort, holds the distinction of being one of only three undefeated horses in 2007 with at least three victories at Los Alamitos Race Course this season. The others are two-year-old Wicked Royal Cartel and seven-year-old claimer Fsixteen. LP Leading Effort posted the fastest qualifying time of 17.47 seconds in trials to the Ford Juvenile California Region Challenge on August 17 and will be ridden by Saul Ramirez, Jr., in the finals.
LP Leading Effort's trial also produced finalists
Masters Call and
Azure Fit. Masters Call, who is owned by a partnership headed by Ed Allred and R.D. Hubbard, was the $485,000 top seller at last year's Los Alamitos Equine Sale. In the Ford Juvenile trials, the son of Thoroughbred sire Hennessy and dam Check Her Twice made up 1 1/4 lengths on LP Leading Effort in the final 220 yards to close from fourth to second. Ramon Sanchez will ride Masters Call for the first time on Friday for trainer Paul Jones.
Azure Fit qualified as a maiden. He is one of three finalists trained by Jim Hanson. Hanson will also saddle Mark and Peggy Brown's
Cantwait and Janet McKinnerney's
Tres Spice. Cantwait broke his maiden with a 24-1 victory in the trials in his first start for Hanson after three races with trainer Blane Schvaneveldt. Tres Spice was a finalist for the Ed Burke Million Futurity prior to running in the Ford Juvenile trials.
After LP Leading Effort, Jaime Gonzalez'
Hawk In The City posted the second-fastest qualifying time of 17.51 seconds. Earlier this year the Jose Antonio Flores-trainee finished fourth in the $400,000 Grade 1 Governor's Cup Futurity.
The third-quickest qualifier was Tres Spice in 17.56 seconds, followed by Masters Call and
Three Green Leaves in 17.57 seconds. Like LP Leading Effort, Three Green Leaves, who is owned by J. Garvan Kelly and Nancy Yearsley, has formerly run in maiden claiming races. Tres Spice and Three Green Leaves are both by second year sire Tres Seis.
Other finalists are Rancho El Alacaran's
Fighter On Fire, Ruben Gonzalez'
Time For A Royal Dip and Arnulfo Covarrubias'
Amstel. Fighter On Fire won the $44,650 California Breeders Freshman Stakes and was a finalist for the $466,100 Grade 1 Kindergarten Futurity earlier this year. Time For A Royal Dip likely had the toughest trip in the Ford Juvenile trials and made up more than two lengths on Cantwait in the final 220 yards. Amstel is still a maiden after four career races.
The Ford Juvenile California Region Challenge is carded as Friday's ninth race at 10:37 p.m. Other 2-year-olds who have already qualified for the $150,000 Grade 2 Ford Juvenile Challenge Championship at Los Alamitos on November 3 are: Pool (Texas), Separatist Baby (East), Gomez Palacio (Northwest), Queens Strawfly (Canada), Pappasito (New Mexico), and WRS Leading Edge (Central).
