Royally Bred Pappasito Takes New Mexico Juvenile Challenge RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 5, 2007—David and Sue Mackie’s Pappasito, the 2-1 favorite, raced to his third win from four starts and his first stakes victory with a front-running score in the Grade 3, $63,180 Ford New Mexico Juvenile Challenge at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday afternoon.
Under a hustling ride from Freddie Martinez, Pappasito won by a half length in a sharp :17.343 for the 350 yards. Runaway Rooster finished second, a length ahead of Texas Version.
Trained by 5-time national champion Paul Jones, Pappasito is realizing the promise of his superb breeding and well-balanced conformation. The son of leading sire Corona Cartel and All American Futurity winner Strawberry Silk broke his maiden at first asking and then scored his second career win when he won his New Mexico Juvenile Challenge trial by a half length in :17.561, the fourth-fastest time from seven trials.
“He ran super,” said Lisa Saumell, who manages the Jones’ operation in New Mexico. “This was a wonderful win for the Mackies.”
Pappasito, a half-brother to 2007 Leading Third Year Sire of Money Earners Stoli, is now eligible to compete in the Grade 2, $150,000 Ford Juvenile Challenge Championship on Nov. 3 at Los Alamitos, the site of his first two career starts.
