| We had a new farrier come out last night to do a consultation for corrective shoeing on Janie because she wings out on her right front. He is going to do her tomorrow. Well I guess little princess got bored while he was looking at her because she reached over and nipped me on the arm! She has NEVER put her mouth on me before. So we had about a 5 second Come To Jesus and her eyes were as big as dinner plates afterwards. Come to think of it, so were my trainer's, the farrier's, my husband's and my son's, LOL! I gave her a few good jerks, hollered at her, gave her a few smacks on the chest and backed her halfway down the aisleway. Then I just turned my back on her, walked her back up and ignored her (while she was looking at me bug-eyed and snorting). Hopefully she will think twice before doing anything like that again. I realize she's still a baby, but I don't put up with that crap! | |

| I know what you mean there, I have three yearlings right now, and they're all going through that real mouthy stage where they have to have their lips on EVERYTHING. The lead shanks of their show halters, my show jacket, my hair, their lead ropes (don't even get me started on THAT. I hardly have any decent lead ropes left anymore.) Atleast you're nipping it in the bud though, so to speak. | |

| LOL, it shocked me because she has NEVER done anything like that before, but I think I shocked her even more when I got after her. She's so quiet and laid back that we rarely have to do anything like that. Her eyes looked like this when I was done... | |

| My 2yo gelding has to be the mouthiest horse I've ever had!!!!
He is TERRIBLE! I smack him HARD when he tries something. He plays with every bucket, lead rope, pole, toy, shirt, shoe he can get to!!! He has never bitten down but he has sure as heck had his nose busted a couple of times...it doesn't seem to matter to him. He snorts, pricks his ears and leans away from you and looks at you like, "I was just sayin Hi" - I have tried dang near everything: Smacking on the nose (hard), yelling and smacking, just yelling, schooling...he absolutely does not respond...he refuses to get ruffled...makes me so dang mad! Its a horrible habit and I've NEVER had this much trouble breaking one of it...EVER and that includes STUDS!
He's just a dad-gum nibbler! Always has been from a weanling on - and it has been a constant battle!
Suggestions!??! | |

| LOL, Lynn, I love that. I was thinking about getting some of that Chew stop stuff and putting it on Scotch's lead rope, it's already nearly destroyed, so it couldn't hurt to use it as a test project, lol. If that doesn't help, I'm getting me some super spicy salsa... It's going to be one narsty lead rope by the time we're done lol. By the way, how did Janie's visit with the farrier go? | |

| I think it's a genetic thing too. Check with his daddy's owner as I am sure it comes through on the Y chromosome. I boarded at a paint breeding and show barn for about 10 years and every baby sired by their stallion was the mouthiest thing you can imagine. Hot sauce is a great idea, except you'd have to have it awfully handy, like a bottle in your pocket. Or maybe just have it handy, in your hand, when schooling a baby and let 'em have it. I still love the babies and mares though. Come to think of it, all of his colts were like that way more than the girls. Reminds me of the trainer in The Black Stallion book who broke a stud by putting a HOT baked potato on a pad secured under his shirt, needless to say, he never tried to bite that trainer again. | |

| Oh, some of 'em are just like that. Kid danged sure was, but then again, he had no tutuledge till he was 2...he's busy, just flat busy... since he's out, though, he sure isn't like he was. Scamp's going to be the same way, busy, but has manners that I instilled in him as a weanling... none of Kid's other daughters and sons are like that, in fact, if anything, they're danged pests..... course Scamp thinks he's a 5-year old stud horse at this point - hormones going rampant on that one! I have several rules... no biting, nipping, rearing or kicking.... period... or it will be returned on you three-fold! I've got about 2 more weeks on my arm, and some certain yearling colt is fixing to get a real rude awakening! He's not bad, just pushing it... | |

| When the farrier was there today, she sniffed all over everyone, but she never opened her bad little mouth. So I guess the lesson sunk in, LOL! | |

| I think one lesson for Janie will do it...poor little mistreated thing... HA! Bluejay... nah, Scamp's not yeyawing with me - he gets a little pushy sometimes, but he's learning Mom's awfully powerful with that right arm. He's getting nasty to Dillon when he's putting him up or out...Rick's even gone in there and ripped him a new one.... kinda funny, ya know, 'cuz Rick never does anything like that... And by the way... Scamp's got a new gate - absolutely gorgeous - Rick and Dillon did a great job... maybe the stupid idgit won't try to commit suicide anymore... danged horse! | |
