ROUND-UP OF CALIFORNIA BREEDERS UNDERCARD
Take A Look At Her In 550-Yard RaceLOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA... Ed Allred's Look Her Over pulled away in the final 100 yards to record an impressive length victory over Paradise Point in the $40,650 550-Yard California Breeders Sophomore Stakes.
Trained by Scott Willoughby,
Look Her Over covered the distance in :26.83 under the guidance of Raul Ramirez Jr. Sired by Check Him Out out of Allred's outstanding broodmare, Oh La Proud, Look Her Over earned $21,037 improving her record to three wins from 12 starts.
Oh La Proud is one of Allred's top producers of all time. Winner of the Golden West Stakes, Oh La Proud also finished fourth in the Governor's Cup Futurity and was a finalist in the Golden State Derby in her racing career. As a broodmare, Oh La Proud has produced AQHA Champions Hawkinson and Hawkish as well as California Sires' Cup Derby winner Pride Of Katella and Paul B Ford Memorial Handicap winner Mister Katella.
Oh La Proud's second dam is
La Rees Rocket, who is a full sister to the outstanding and incomparable champion
Charger Bar. La Rees Rocket was bred to the Jet Deck stallion Jet Spice in the late 1970s and the result was
Oh La Ree, who is the dam of
Oh La Proud.
"I bought Oh La Ree for $75,000 and that was a big price back then," Allred said. "She was a good runner and won some stakes races. I bought her because she was from the same family as Charger Bar. I bred her to Spencer Childers' stallion Shirley's Champion and that's how we got Oh La Proud." While this was Look Her Over's first stakes win, the young filly was already a favorite of noted owner and breeder Dr. James Streelman of Dutch Masters III.
"Dr. Streelman has been wanting to buy this filly for a while now," said Allred with a smile. "He raced her half-brother Pride Of Katella, who qualified to several stakes races for Dutch Masters III."
Willoughby was pleased to see Look Her Over deliver such a strong performance. "She's had bad luck in some of her races and she's also been facing some very good horses," Willoughby explained. "We wanted to get her a win and we figured that the longer distance would be a benefit. She ran a good race and hopefully we can build on this effort for some of the later derbies this year."

Rancho El Alacran With A Big Win On Champions NightIt's been a great year for Rancho El Alacrán in Breeders races this year. Just recently, the Sinaloa, Mexico-based operation won one of the top races for Mexican-bred Quarter Horses at El Hipodromo de Las Americas - a race worth $160,000 - with their homebred Simply Jackpot. On Saturday night, Rancho El Alacrán saw their First Down Dash colt
Fighter On Fire score a 3/4 length win over Thinking First in the $44,650 California Breeders Freshman Stakes.
"This is a very important win for us," said Gilberto Vega, who operates Rancho El Alacrán along with his father Joaquin Vega Acuña and his brother Joaquin Jr. "We have great expectations for Fighter On Fire to have a stallion career at our ranch in Mexico."
Rancho el Alacrán is located next to el Rio Fuerte in the northern part of the state of Sinaloa and is the home to more than 120 horses, including several stallions. Their most noted 'semental,' which is the Spanish word for stallion, is the Chicks Beduino stud Simply Silver Sage, who is the sire of Simply Jackpot. Simply Silver Sage's family includes well-known names such as champion Jaime Jay, champion and All American Futurity winner Teller Carter, Grade 1 stakes winner The Informant, The Fling King, Tell Em Im Gone and Rare King.
"We take our horses very seriously," said Gilberto Vega. "My grandfather operated this ranch and now we're helping our father run it. The ranch has been around for more than 40 years and we're always trying hard to improve our breeding stock. We're busy right now trying to accumulate better mares and better horses. The only way to improve this is to go and compete at the top level and that's why we are here at Los Alamitos. We feel that earning black type here with a colt like Fighter On Fire is a big step forward."
Rancho el Alacrán is also a highly popular track for match races in Mexico. "We have races at our ranch every Sunday," Vega explained. "Our track is known as 'La Paloma.' "
Ridden by Rodrigo Aceves and saddled by Adan Farias,
Fighter On Fire earned $22,907 for the win. Previously the ninth place finisher in the Kindergarten Futurity and the third place finisher in the Ed Burke Juvenile Stakes, Fighter On Fire is a half brother to the colt Fishers Chenille. Also owned by Rancho el Alacrán, Fishers Chenille has won three straight races this year at Los Alamitos, his last coming against $30,000 claimers.
Ed Allred's
Thinking First earned $9,371 for running second, while EG High Desert Farms'
Short Czech earned $5,206 for running third.

"With the help of (trainer) Hector Jaime Hernandez, we're starting to do a lot better," said Balfred Guzman. "He's been a big help to our team."
"Hector has been helping us pick out our yearlings," added Jose Guzman. "We bought a couple at the Schvaneveldt/Andreini Sale last year and we purchased a filly at the Ruidoso Sale as well."
Rancho Guzman began campaigning horses four years ago. Their first horse was Heza Fast Streaker. They've now won four races over the last three months including one earlier this week with Rockin Meter.
"Two years ago our dad purchased the ranch in Riverside and that's our homebase," Jose added.
The brothers' main source of income is a mortgage business in Orange County named the Hispano Corporation. Based in Santa Ana, the Hispano Corporation has been in existence for the past seven years.
Mojave County earned $8,910 for the win to take his career bankroll to $21,248. Bred by Ed Allred, this was Mojave County's third win from 12 starts.
