Trio Of Fillies Headline Saturday’s Black Gold Futurity

By CHRISTA MORRIS
Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association

SALLISAW, OK—AUGUST 23, 2007—A total of seven fillies will give the boys a run for their money in the Black Gold Futurity—300 Yard Division with three of the top four contenders being fillies as well. The $100,000 final will run Saturday, August 25 at Blue Ribbon Downs in Sallisaw, Oklahoma.

Bill Price’s Cartel Lady showed to be strong after a two-month layoff by winning her trial heat by 3/4 length under the training of Eddie Willis with Larry Payne in the irons. The Southern Cartel filly made a solid second place finish in the Heritage Place Juvenile in June.

Racing for owner/breeder Bella Vista Farms, Fly Like A Shazoom also won her trial by 3/4 length with a strong driving finish. The Shazoom filly, trained by John Havener and ridden by Cody Smith, broke her maiden in the trial and showed significant improvement from her last out in April.

This Candys Okay has proved to be tough competition this summer with a second place finish in the $126,000 Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Futurity and two other wins since the end of May. The Okey Dokey Dale filly races for owner/breeder Carl Pevehouse, trainer Stacy Charette-Hill and jockey Roy Baldillez. Ima Candy Suspect runs as an entry with This Candys Okay and tries for his third win in a row on Saturday.

The remainder of the field includes: Pine Ridge Farm LLC’s Queena Corrina; David and Mikki Stone’s Guns A Streakin; Phillip Bartle’s Lone Star Stoli; Michael Bridges’ Ncc Absolute; Jose Angel’s Darlings Eye Opener and Alice Dodd’s Easy Chiseled Stone.

Oklahoma offers nearly year-round racing opportunities for American Quarter Horses, Paints and Appaloosas. The 2008 racing calendar includes nearly $20,000,000 in projected purses, 44 AQHA Graded Stakes races, 80 total stakes and the $1,000,000 Est. Heritage Place Futurity.
