BIG BAD N BROWN DOMINATES RED CELL CHALLENGE
July 16, 2007 – A one-time $15,000 claimer down the straightaway, fastest qualifier Big Bad N Brown drew off to a 3 ˝-length win in the 870-yard, $26,235 Red Cell Texas Distance Challenge (G3) July 14 at Sam Houston Race Park. Jeff Jerman rode the 3-year-old Gold Regent (TB) gelding to his fourth win in 12 outs and first stakes victory.
Big Bad N Brown races for P.J. Schachle of Redondo Beach, California, and trainer R.C. “Mike” Howell. Bred by Dean Layh of Denton, Texas, the gelding became the first stakes winner from 30 American Quarter Horse starters sired by Gold Regent, an 11-year-old stallion by Mr. Prospector (TB). He is also one of two starters foaled by his winning dam, the Mr Eye Opener mare Molly May Eye.
“He broke excellent,” said Jerman. “I thought I was going to be in between horses, but (second-fastest qualifier and runner-up A Dasha Red) threw his head and didn’t break.
"This horse impressed me so much in his trial," added the rider. "When he switches to his right lead coming down the lane, he gets so much stronger.”
The $13,511 winner’s share of the purse nearly doubled Big Bad N Brown’s bankroll to $27,061. He’s won two of his three starts at the 870-yard trip.
