RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JUNE 30, 2007—A unique racing schedule this week, dictated by the Fourth of July holiday, starts on Wednesday afternoon with Tricky Dust and La Especial Corona racing in the $40,000 Masters Salls Handicap over 870 yards.
There is no racing on Thursday afternoon and then racing resumes on Friday and runs through Sunday. First post time will be 1 p.m., except for Friday, when there will be a special first post time to accommodate the trials to the Grade 1, $625,000 Rainbow Futurity. That Friday post time will be announced on Sunday after the number of Rainbow Futurity trials are determined.
Joan Dale Hubbard’s Tricky Dust was the top 870-yard horse last summer at Ruidoso Downs with three wins from three starts, including two stakes wins. The 7-year-old Favorite Trick (TB) gelding from the Paul Jones barn should be rounding into peak form after returning from a winter layoff to finish third in the Fine Loom Handicap as the 19-10 favorite.
Sandy Erwin’s La Especial Corona is in the midst of his best campaign as a 4-year-old for trainer Jose Dominguez. The Starwfly Special gelding won his first three starts, including the Grade 2 Red Cell New Mexico Distance Challenge, before finishing a competitive second in the Fine Loom Handicap.
