TQHA Sires' Cup Stakes and Claiming Futurity on Weekend Card HOUSTON, TX—AUGUST 16, 2007—Live American Quarter Horse Meeting returns to Sam Houston Race Park on Friday, August 17 with ten races beginning at 6:00 p.m. Singer and songwriter, Robert Earl Keen will sing the National Anthem prior to the first race and perform in the Verizon Wireless Concert Series following racing.
The Saturday night card will feature the $15,000 TQHA Sires’ Cup Stakes and the final of the $45,900 TQHA Claiming Futurity for 2-year-olds.
Must Be Royal, a 2-year-old This Snow Is Royal filly owned by Dan W. Nicks and trained by R.L. Rick Robinson, was the fastest qualifier in trials on Friday, August 3. This is the first year the race has been offered by the Texas Quarter Horse Association.
Sam Houston Race Park also presents a Sunday afternoon racing card at 1:30 p.m. Admission to the northwest Houston racetrack is $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for senior citizens and children 12 and under are free.
Wassup T Doc Continues Winning Streak at Sam Houston Race ParkWassup T Doc is having an amazing year for trainer Jesse Yoakum and owners Bernardine and Gordon Haslam. The 6-year-old Texas-bred is undefeated in 2007 and has won six races this year, including four consecutive victories at Sam Houston Race Park .
The sorrel Doctor Bright gelding returned to action last Sunday in the seventh race, a $6,500 starter allowance and part of the Any Given Sunday Starter Series. Russel Hadley, who won five races on the Sunday card, piloted Wassup T Doc ($2.80) in the 350-yard dash, crossing the wire in :17.94.
Yoakum saddled four horses last weekend, winning three of his four starts. Another solid veteran from the Yoakum barn, the 9-year-old Ronas Wind Dancer ($3.20) won the ninth race on Sunday.
"I don't brag on them (horses) because it will come back to bite you", said Yoakum, a man of very few words "I let the horses speak for themselves".
Patrionic Fastest Qualifier in $128,385 Dixie Stallion Stakes FuturityPatrionic, a 2-year-old Game Patriot filly owned by Dennis J. Touchet and trained by Janis D. Ortiz, was the fastest qualifier in trials on Friday, August 10 for the $128,385 Dixie Stallion Stakes Futurity. Arturo Puga rode the daughter of Game Patriot in the final trial of the evening, covering 350-yards in :17.793.
