PostSubject: Breeding season - something to laugh about! ARGH!   Breeding season - something to laugh about! ARGH! Icon_minitimeApril 10th 2007, 8:04 am

Thought I'd give everybody a chuckle today. So sit back, grab some coffee, or your favorite beverage, and here we go....

Now, this story might be a long-winded - you know me... HA! Pretty much you all know that my best mare is Cool, Scamp's mom. This story involves me, Rick, Cool and Kid. Also recall, that two years ago, Cool is the one that set back, when for whatever reason while I was getting Kid out, Rick had let Dillon take the rope, she set back, squeshed his hand, and he had to have surgery as it literally pulled his little finger out of the socket. Okay, remember that...and you guys know how I am about rowdy horses - I just won't tolerate it. We thought it was a freak thing... boy, were we wrong!

So I'll back up a bit... on her foal heat, she got a little nasty, and I had to trade with Rick - let Rick handle Kid. Kid got a little confused, but I was able to talk him through it. And we tried everything... she was just a total witch to deal with, until I got the twitch and clamped down, and kept tapping between her eyes to keep her focused...well, apparnetly that didn't work, she didn't take on the foal heat.

Day before yesterday... at the teasing wall, doing her thing, and Kid squeals, she gets to hammering on the wall. I told Rick I'd had enough of this crap, to put the B*T*CH UP!

Last night... so we ace her, Rick hits the vein, with 4 cc's of Ace. Five minutes later, I'm bringing out Kid... once again, we're doing the mare thing but kicking like a danged mule. So Rick grabs the twitch, twitches her, wraps the big mare rope around the post about 3 times (stupid mistake) and when me and Kid walk up, he's tip toeing up to her, she starts kicking like a mule, me and Kid run back... I don't know who was running faster, me or him... then all of a sudden she sits back, and breaks the danged rope... now this is no ordinary rope.. this is a huge cotton rope, long and wide. Now, me and Kid are really running out of there... I've had a mare do that before and came after me... I mean, we were baling out of that breeding pen!

Rick gets super pissed. Now, this is his favorite mare - got real irritated at me when I thought about selling her...well, what's coming out of his mouth is - THAT'S ENOUGH, YOU SELL THAT WITCH, (not the exact terminology there, but you get the drift)... uh-huh, yeah, all righty.

So I told him I'd had enough. I put Kid back up, tell him I'll be right back, go back up to the house, and I'm fixing to shoot this heifer with so much la-la juice I don't care if he has to get her while she's laying down. So I bring back 3 more cc's of Ace (and undersatnd I absolutley HATE shooting mares up!), shoot it in her mouth, after all the yeyaw between me and Rick about what works and doesn't work... and I tell him we're going back to the house, put up the groceries, and start the green beans for supper. About 20 minutes later, we walk back out there, after piddling in the barn for a bit, and she looks happy, a little drowsy, still standing... okay, looks like we're good to go.

So I help Rick put the lip chain on, and there's no tying this time. He's on the other side of the dummy, and somehow I've got to slink up there with Kid. So there's the lip chain, the twitch, and she's in la-la land... or so we thought....

As soon as me and Kid start slinking up there, and he's got everything tucked up, sticking his neck out, looking at me like I've lost my ever living mind... we get close, and she sets back, danged near pulls Rick over the breeding dummy, but he doesn't let go, and me and Kid have no where to go, but on the other side of the dummy, and by GOSH we're moving! So all three of us are on the other side of the dummy being protected from this mule kicking/pulling back-mare!

So Rick goes through one of his screaming fits, and I told him to let me have the mare... he knows what's coming next... nope, I've got her... uh-huh, yeah, all righty then... so he gets her under control. Now, we're slap dab in the middle of the breeding area, nothing between us, just air... well, me and Kid aren't real keen about this, but we see where we can duck out if we need to.

I ask Rick... are you sure you have her. Yep, I've got her... uh-huh, yeah... so me and Kid tip toe up there, he's keeping everything tucked, and he's a face kind of guy, so he starts up at her head... remember now, nothing but air here... and I tell him to back - he knows by gosh, he'd better back his butt real quick... gets to the flanks, still has everything tucked... so far, so good... he drops, nips at her flanks to test the waters, okay, so far, so good, Mom, she's not going to kill us... he's ready, and I holler OKAY! He gets up there and does his thing... takes a little longer than usual, and off he comes... just a breathing like all get out.

I told Rick whatever you do, DON'T LET GO YET! We start going out of the breeding area and Kid's turning around, doing the sidepass thing all the way out of the breeding pen making sure that heifer isn't coming after us - that cracked me up.

Needless to say, Rick and I had a long conversation of why this heifer is all of a sudden doing this kind of mess. I told him if he didn't get her right on the tying up part, that I was going to get ahold of her, and I wasn't going to be kind... as far as I'm concerned, she needed a severe arse whupping big time, and I wouldn't mind holding a danged lounge whip in my hand that when she sets back, to whup the living snot out of her... I CANNOT stand a horse that sets back! Much less my own danged mare! So Rick's taking vacation next week, if he can't fix her, then I will.

We even talked about hobbles... I asked him, are you stupid enough to get down there with your head to put the danged things on? We started laughing thinking about that scenario. Already tried the tying up one leg thing before on her foal heat, and I thought she was going to tear her leg off kicking. And the vet wondered why I wanted a whole bottle of Ace... DUH!

And by the way, the beans were darned near ready by the time we got back in the house... HA!

They were great - hit the spot. Had some new taters in 'em, and a big ole roast and fresh maters.

Ohh fun...Gotta love it...

Garrett works at a TB farm so EVERYTHING is live cover...it can turn into a circus REAL quick!!!

I love that I get to do AI with my girls (Quarters)...Itsy tried to kick the vet OVER the back of the stocks...she got a talking to...she just doesn't like anything messin around back there...after all she has been through though - I'm thrilled she's as spunky and firey as she is!

At least the beans were good! Hehe - is it going to be a colt or a filly? Wink

I've been to a T-bred farm while they were breeding, and those suckers are enormous...gives me the heebies...

I asked Rick what he wanted out of Cool - a colt or a filly, he said a colt. I said, okie doke, see what I can do. So we'll see. Truthfully, I think both of us want another little Scampers.

Holy cow! That sure sounds like an eventful day! I too hate it when horses pull back... My TB mare did that once.... dont know why, put I put an end to it right there and then... she hasn't done it since!

LOL the way you explain how Kid felt and responded to the events is hilarious!

Update! Well, okay, that uh, might have, uh, been a little of, uh, my fault. Yikes!

Trent had already taken off to church, Rick hadn't got home yet, so I told Dillon I was getting Cool out - he had a wild look on his face like he was thinking about running to the hills... HA! Told him, no, that I'd wait till his Dad got home if we actually did anything.

So I pulled a sneaky. Kid was already up in his stall, so I got ahold of Cool and baby with just a regular lead rope, and walked her in the barn in front of Kid. Well, she just kind of stood there, till he nipped at her, and she tried to kick the front of his stall down. Good thing those things are solid oak boards.

So I backed her up a bit more, and she broke on down. Looked up, and here comes Rick. He says, whatcha think? I said, well, she's doing better than what she did before, let's take her out and let's see what she does, but if she pulls this crap again, put her big butt (not the word I used) up!

Rick's decided he wasn't going to tie her, so here we are again out in the middle of freaking air, no twitch, no drugs, just a lip chain. Kid wasn't wasting no time this time, he slunk up, she was perfectly still, and up he went... I'm thinking, hurry, hurry, before she kills us all. She never moved!

So, uh, I might have been, uh, rushing her, uh, just a bit. Oh, well, she's a big girl, she can handle it. The baby's 32 days old today.
