Ok- so I have a question...

I recently traded my 3yo gelding for a 7yo mare.

I had my gelding listed for sale, the lady with the mare contacted me. I said I would probably use her as a broodmare.

Is there an issue if I sell the mare?

I don't want a reputation as a horse-trader, because I'm not - BUT, the mare is a good mare but she isn't AWESOME - and I might have a guy in KS who would want her - he has been calling me every couple of months for the past year looking for something that could run 250yds (which was where this mare won and ROMed)...
I don't have her advertised - but I did send him a note and he wants pics. I priced her a bit high for negotiation purposes (I KNOW he will try to get her down regardless of what I price her at)...

What do yall think? The lady is the one who approached me on the trade so I kinda think its ok - whereas if I had approached her its a little different - I know its the same - but to me it isn't....
So - is it ok for me to sell her or does that make me look bad?

It's always best to be honest. I would let the person you got the mare from know that she is not going to work for you and you will be selling her. Give her the chance to buy her back is she wants her.. Do not make up stories about why. Just be honest. If she wants the mare back she can pay the price for her. Otherwise sell her an move on. cheers

I have been through this just recently. And, the lies about what was really going on pissed me off. Shocked No There is no reason to make up stories. PERIOD.. Sell her if you need to. Just be honest about why you are selling her.. coffee

Did the lady say that if you were to get rid of her that she gets first option? To me if she wanted her she wouldnt of got rid of her.
That isnt what I concider a horse trader. One who deals with alot of buying, selling and trading would be a horse trader to me.

if you end up bringing the mare to KS insead of him coming to get her let me know...maybe we can do lunch Smile I do agree with the phone call to her just to let her know... but you sure don't sound like a trader to me from that simple transaction

I do not think that you would be considered a horse trader especially if you give her the first right of refusal. Sometimes things do not work out the way you planned or hoped when you get another horse. I agree with Mare about if she wanted her she wouldn't of got rid of her.

Yeah - When she brought her here she wasn't 100% straight-forward about the mare...nothing terrible and nothing that would have impacted me wanting her - I still stand by taking her for the gelding (the mare vs gelding argument)

The lady didn't say a word about wanting her back ever - she doesn't breed and the mare is NOT a barrel mare at all (she bucks and has NO rate) - the mare LOVES to run - you can tell that racing and being a momma are her two job options...

I'm going to send the guy in KS some pics and send the lady a note...

Lynn - we would probably meet him in OK City when we're up there for the Heritage Place sale here in a couple of weeks...however, if we decide to make the rest of the trip I will DEF let you know!!!

If you swapped papers, then she has your horse, you have her's... that's it. Nobody else's business what you do with the mare or what she does with the gelding.
