Friday Night Features Dash For Cash Derby Trials, Kool Kue Baby 'Cap
Six trial races for the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Derby and the $20,000 Kool Kue Baby Handicap, a 350-yard sprint for fillies and mares, highlight Friday night's 11-race program at Lone Star Park.
The 440-yard Derby trials will be run as Races 3-8. The Oct. 27 final is estimated to be worth $175,000. Entrants include Bluebonnet Stakes winner Bridled Lightnin; Sam Houston Derby winner Diamond Tres Seis; Speed Horse Gold and Silver Cup Derby champ Doc Maxwell; Retama Park Derby winner Eyesa Famous; All American Derby sixth place finisher Feature for You; Canterbury Park Derby winner First Class Smarty; All American Derby and Retama Park Derby third Hiclass La Jolla; Oklahoma Horsemen's Association Derby winner Jet Black Rebel; TQHA Sires' Cup Derby winner Jess a Lil Bit More; Remington Park Derby runner-up Jess Tie Quik; Altoona Derby and Iowa Double Gold Derby winner Ledum; Manor Downs Derby winner Miss Kips Streakin; New Mexico HBA Stakes winner and West Texas Derby runner-up Mister Ww; Firecracker Derby runner-up My First Passion; 2006 Ruidoso Futurity winner Okey Dokey Fantasy; and Oklahoma Bred Quarter Horse Derby winner Streakin Postoak.
Kool Kue Baby 'Cap
After the trials, Sin Tacha Perry and Shake Em Fever will meet for the fourth straight time in the Kool Kue Baby, to be run as Race 9 at approximately 10:11 p.m. CT.
Sin Tacha Perry, the 4-year-old Mr Jess Perry filly trained by Janet Van Bebber, landed post No. 1 and Shake Em Fever, a 5-year-old mare conditioned by leading trainer Judd Kearl, drew the outside stall in a field of 10 fillies and mares.
Sin Tacha Perry won the $24,000 TQHA Sires' Cup Stakes at Sam Houston on Aug. 18, while Shake Em Fever finished sixth. In their previous meeting on July 14, Shake Em Fever, a five-year-old Royal Shake Em mare, prevailed in the Grade 3, $35,370 John Deere Texas Distaff Challenge Stakes, with Sin Tacha Perry finishing eighth.

Photo Courtesy: Lone Star Park Diamond Tres Seis Fastest Of All In Dash For Cash Derby Trials GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—OCTOBER, 12, 2007—Mercy and Ray Hinklin's Sam Houston Derby winner Diamond Tres Seis, ridden by Gilbert Ortiz and trained by Heath Taylor, ran 440 yards in :21.791 Friday night at Lone Star Park and was the fastest qualifier to the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Derby, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27. Six trial races were staged for 3-year-old American Quarter Horses and the 10 fastest times advanced to the final, which will be worth a record $214,500. Diamond Tres Seis, a Texas-bred Tres Seis gelding out of the Dash For Cash mare Meddlin Mischief, will enter the final in two weeks with seven wins in 10 starts and earnings of $66,353. In 2007, he's perfect in five starts. "We [gelded] him and gave him a long rest, and he's really turned into a nice horse," said Taylor, the nation's second-ranked trainer in money won ($2.3 million) who also qualified TQHA Sires' Cup Derby winner Jess a Lil Bit More. "Tonight, he stood in the starting gate well and got away okay, but he really finished well at the end." Taylor also holds a strong hand Saturday night with five entrants in the Dash For Cash Futurity trials, including Retama Park and Manor Downs Futurity winner Swingin Jess, All American Futurity third Captain Courage and unbeaten Firecracker Futurity winner Coronas Leaving You. The first of 13 trial races for 2-year-olds at 400 yards is 6:35 p.m. CT. The Dash For Cash Futurity, worth an estimated $450,000, also will be run Oct. 27. Photo Courtesy: Lone Star Park Trey Wood Gets First Stakes Win in Kool Kue Baby Handicap GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—OCTOBER, 12, 2007—Immediately after Friday's Dash For Cash Derby trials, Jane Russell's 4-year-old Sheza Black Dasher beat Streakin Amber by a neck to win the $20,000 Kool Kue Baby Handicap. Trained by 19-year-old Trey Wood and ridden by Roy Baldillez, Sheza Black Dasher by Some Dasher ran 350 yards in :17.862 to win her fourth race in 12 career starts. The $11,000 winner's share of the purse jumped her earnings to $50,465. She paid $14 to win. "She's a good filly and showed a lot of heart tonight," said Wood, the son of trainer Blane Wood who notched his first career stakes win since taking out his trainer's license last year. "She gives you all she's got all the time." Streakin Amber, by Streakin La Jolla, picked up second place money for owner Arnold J. Trahan and trainer Heath Taylor. | He got away 5th, looked like he had trouble with the track, veered out a little but was coming on pretty fast at the finish to lose by 1/2 length to the winner. 10th fastest qualifier had a time of 22.179. ODF's time was 22.244. There has been a lot of talk about how bad the track is and there was a head wind of about 12 mph. Wish he had qualified. | |
