Coronas Leaving You Much The Best in Grade 2 Firecracker Final

VINTON, LA—JULY 1, 2007—If there was any hope for Coronas Leaving You's nine opponents in the $230,150 Firecracker Futurity(G2) at Delta Downs, it was that the Heath Taylor trained colt had never run in stakes company before. It hardly mattered when the long striding Coronas Leaving You dominated every step of the race to win by 1-1/2 lengths.
Bob an Jerry Gaston's two-year-old Corona Cartel colt earned his fourth consecutive victory in as many starts and hardly broke a sweat as the prohibitive favorite on a muggy night in Vinton. Bred in Texas by Andria Armer, Coronas Leaving You covered the distance over a fast track in a time of :17.380, just 5/100ths off the track record. The clocking was good enough for a speed index of 102.

Breaking from the six hole for Gilbert Ortiz, Coronas Leaving You established an early lead, was never in danger, while winning by daylight.

The bay colt began his career with a maiden win on April 15 at Remington Park. He came back on May 12 to win his Heritage Place Futurity trial by one length but his time failed to qualify to the grade 1 final. Coronas Leaving You then moved to Delta where he won his Firecracker trial by two lengths to post the fastest time on June 14th. He now has four wins in four starts and earnings of $115,880.

A royally bred colt, he is a half-brother to three stakes winners including 2002 World Champion Whosleavingwho. With three sons of Corona Cartel currently on the 'Top Ten First Year Sires of Money Earners for 2007 List', the Gaston's should be looking at a future stallion prospect.

The Gaston's and Taylor were picking up their second stakes victory in 24 hours, after winning the $24,750 Stephen F. Austin Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday night with St Pats First, a home-bred son of First Down Dash out of their Mr Jess Perry mare St Pats Tea.

Another Corona Cartel, Mito Corona, finished second to earn $39,126 for owners Vessels Stallion Farm, LLC and Eddie Martin. Bred by Horner Running Horses, Mito Corona came into the trials off a second-place effort to Coronas Leaving You. He is trained by Justin Haug and was ridden by Jose Vega.

Six Fols Dash finished a neck back in third for owner Edmund W. Martin, Jr. Also saddled by Haug, the First Down Dash filly was ridden by Orlando Baldillez and earned $23,015.

Mito Corona and Six Fols Dash ran as a coupled entry.

Coronas Leaving You paid $3.00, $2.20 and $2.10. Mito Corona returned $2.50 and $3.80, Six Fols Dash was $2.60 and $3.80 to show.

Completing the field were First Down Devon, Dash to the Win, Jess Looking Good, Southern Ladys Alibi and Zoom On Over. Separatist In View and Zazoom were scratched.
