| hmmm I'm very confused haha for the longest time I've wanted to be a Vet specializing in Equine Sports Medicine and Orthopedics ---- but there really isn't a need for that no vet really does that you know? plus I'm paying for college myself (and vet school) and $100k in debt doesn't sound like a ton of fun I was also thinking about doing athletic training in people -- but most likely I wouldn't get to work with a pro team just a high school -- gah smelly kids! I am running a horse show for my school right now and that seems like a lot of fun -- but you really can't make a living doing that right? Professional Horse Show Manager I like what my trainer does (designs trail courses) and she talks to Tim Kimura like everyday! how cool is that! but she can't make a living off of that alone she is a teacher and does lessons on the side Maybe a National Field Hockey League will spring up in the next few years what's a few more cortisone shots in the ankle??? every team needs a short girl! Maybe I'll be a mailman secretly -- I want to be a loan shark does anyone know what I want to be when I grow up? | |

| Well, I can tell you what my sister did. She went to A&M to be a vet - I wish you could've heard my grandmother saying something about her darling granddaughter having her hand up a cow's yehaw... anyhoo, she instead changed her major to animal science. She even got to work out at the barn, and they all got their own horses, and had to have mock shows, etc... she loved that - but she also had to go to a packing plant and cut up things... ARGH! Anyhoo, once she graduated and as time goes by, my other sister, who works with the heart surgeons nearby, talked her in to going to a perfusionist school - hope I got that spelling right. Anyhoo, she works the heart and lung machine during surgery or after surgery. Get this... are you sitting down... she's contract - meaning, she doesn't work for any particular hospital, just as an on-needed basis... she is making $500 a day - I kid you not!!!!! So she works oh, about 7-10 days out of the month and then plays the rest - I kid you not - once again!!!! So might want to think about something like that... Schooling was unreal, she had to be accepted, and she went to some school down at Children's Hospital in Houston. That's for you smarty people, though - no way I can handle all that medical crap... GAWD! | |

| I started out to be a vet. Four yrs into it, I decided that I couldn't be as cold/discompassionate as a vet needs to be. So....I got my LPN license. I like people a lot less than animals. Nursing was ok....But I really liked emergency medicine....So I went to EMS school. Eventually, I burned out. I didn't work for a long time. Now I work for WM. Not a great career move. I don't recomend it for anyone. | |

| What about being just a large animal vet instead of specializing? Or what about a repro specialist? They are always in demand these days, just might be harder to get your foot in the door (building reputation, etc.).
Are you interested in computers at all? The jobs you mentioned are more outdoorsy stuff so I don't know if this will appeal to you... but my major is Information Systems. It's sort of a blend of business and computers, the management of "information". There is a huge range of opportunities for I.S. majors in pretty much any field. Hospitals, software companies, any big corporation, etc., etc. all have an IT department and the need for I.S. staff. There are many different types of job you can get ranging from a computer programming all the way up to high level management. Salaries are great and the demand for IS majors is increasing.

| if I could do it over again Id be a equine vet specializing in repo/nutrition work dang there is a ton of money to be made... in KS if you go to vet school and just specialize in large animals (can't make horses your only focus) they will pay for vet school if you go to work in an under represented area-basically you have to do some cow work for a while but you can do equine too and school is basically free Im not sure how it works hubby is looking into it right now but they are hurting bad for large animal vets really really bad... then you go on and do special classes as you have time focusing on your main love equines. | |

| Lynn, very good point. We're hurting for large animal vets down here as well. None of the single practicing vets have any help - which is a bummer. | |

| Theres a lady down the road from me that works jan-june. She foals out mares. period. Make good money, really good. Foals out horses from all over. 150.00 for foaling, 15.00 a day until they foal. Just as soon as one goes out another comes in, she has a waiting list a mile long. She and her husband quit there jobs and do this. It might be a good thing to get into that goes along with the equine job aspect. She has her barn full all the time. I have used her on Maiden mares. Its just easier, when kirt is working out of town and Im working too. Of corse I dont take mine until they are waxed. But some stay there for a month at a time. She has the cameras, Foal kits, Belts to put on them A big office in the barn, just a neat set up. Then they are done for the year and have 6 months off. They have had mares and foals survice red bags foaling. They are good. Anyway just a thought. | |

| I was going to be a vet. Then, I met my husband and decided I didn't want to go away to school for so long so I became an RN. Nursing is a good field. You can work 3 days a week and still be considered full time. Of course, they are 12 hour shifts. Of course, DH and I were stupid and opened our own business so I can't just do the 3 days per week thing. Mine is a 24/7 job. If i had it to do over again, I'd probably be a teacher. THen, I'd have all summer off to play with the horsies.

| I could never be a vet.. The stupid people would all die.. And, they do not make enough money for all the education they need.. Too much heart ache for me. Nursing is a great field to go in to.. You can specialize in the field. Just about name when and where you will work. And get paid very well for it. Help people who will likely be happy you did. Teachers do not make enough money and their jobs are never secure. Police officers can make good money if you can stand the stress of never knowing if the next person you come in contact with is going to kill you.. An attorney gets paid pretty good bucks to lie if you can get the clients with money. I say marry very rich and get someone who spoils the heck out of you and gives you everything you want.. Then just volunteer when you have the time | |

Do you know what college has that major? -- they have to have equestrian too I'm going up to NY to visit my great-aunt she's in the horse business used to show a lot and judge until a drunk driver hit the side of her parked trailer when she was sleeping at a show now she can't ride anymore, but is still very active in the horse industry (I think she is down to 4 horses) I'm going to talk to her about where to go with my life lol -- I can't find someone who will pay me to sit arround and play with Molly all day!

| No college for that one.. Just remember to be very picky when you decide it's time to settle down. I found that finding myself had to come first.. Took me a long time to do that.. Your education is so improtant.. Figure out what you love to do and go from there.. Keep in mind that things you enjoy may come in many forms.. And, if you are going to invest a lot of $$$ in your education you should get a return on it down the road.. Some people get masters degrees and never end up doing what they thought they would be doing.. Some, do and hate it so much they retreat to a simply life just to keep their minds in tact. Smart to get advise and ask people who know you. You may already be really good a something and don't even know it. We all have something special about us that we do not see in our selves.. | |

| hmm I was thinking maybe I want to do Equine Rehab? I like the thought of myself getting my DVM (just call me Dr. Meg ) but I don't want to do surgery. Maybe Rehab and Referals? I like taking care of sick horseys hehe and I like putting muscle back onto 'em and getting 'em back into shape. Is there really a market for that or am I kidding myself? | |

| Well, I know of no one who does that except the vets who have never owned a horse and go by what the books tell them.. Reproduction is a biggie. Course you have to deal with stupid humans on that one. The vets just do not make enough money to pay for the education. The course I took at OSU was 28 hours more training then the vet students get on reproduction. The only thing I do not like to do that we were taught to do is rectal palpation. Course you could get on at a ranch that is loaded with $$$$$$$$$$ and do theirs or work at the track on rehab Sounds like you may be talking more about rescue and that would be very hard to deal with.. I can give you a subject to test your skills right now.. How about my colt (Chad) that the vets say has PSSM.. How can I get his muscle back? Maybe you can tell me something I do not already know? That would be great if you can. There are pics posted of him on the vet thread.. Would be fun to see if you come up with something that will work.. He is a skinny mini.. I would sure like to see him coming back and growing again.. Remember it is high fat, low carbs and starch for him.. | |

| bluejay- hmm I just read that PSSM is like tying-up
my friend's gelding ties up like its his job -- they feed him rice bran and for hay he gets oat hay or alfalfa w/ a nice top dressing dressing of corn oil
maybe that stuff will help?

| That sounds like a great diet for the gelding.. And, PSSM is basically tying up. Right now Chad gets: Rice bran (22% fat) Empowered (22%fat) vitamins/minerals Yucca DAC Oil MSM Probiotics daily wormer alfalfa beet pulp He would not eat at all so we got him going on oats. Now he eats really good so we are taking him off the oats. The other recomended feed for him is Nutrena Safe choice.. Seems that since he is nearly off the oats he is starting to pick up. That is the worse thing for him to eat. But, he was starving so I fed him. My plan is to feed him 1lb each of the rice bran, empowered and safe choice twice a day along with a 1 1/2 cups of soaked beet pulp. Then his addatives once a day along with the alfalfa.. The DAC oil is 99% fat and has all the omega fatty acids in it. You only give 1 oz a day of that.. I choose the rice bran and empowered because the diet needs to be high fat and low starch and carbs.. I did a lot of label reading. I wanted to keep him on the vitamin/mineral program since it protects his joints while he is growing. So, finding something that did not have all that in it was not easy. Course he has not grown since he got sick and looks to be even smaller then he was. That may be because of the lack of muscle on him. I choose not to go with the oil since I had other high fat products to feed him. I am not sure why they recommend oat hay since it is full of oats? Anyway, almost impossible to get around here.. I just ordered the Yucca for him. It's a natural anti inflamitory and works great on younger growing horses for keeping the Epyth..away when used in combination with MSM. I haved used this for years.. It really is the only thing that works on older horses with authritis and other stiffness problems. You can add vitamin C to this for better absorbtion. There are many things out there for this.. I have tried them and they do not work. This is inexpensive and does the job. Vitamin C and MSM work great on dogs with joint trouble as well.. I had a border collie who could hardly walk. I learned about this from a German Shepard breeder and tried it. He was like his young self again in just a few days. I swear by it.. I learn more about this stuff from people who have horses.. Who have had problems and found ways to solve the problems.. Many people use the Legand shots on their horses.. They are expensive and require the vet.. The Yucca and MSM fed daily does the same thing. And, we are talking really inexpensive to buy and use.. | |

| I want to go into Equine Medicine myself... preferrably Equine Rehab. We went to KESMARC in Versailles, KY last year after our 4H judging competition and omg I'm in love with that place they had all the pools, underwater treads, everything. They also have one of those hyperbolic chamber thingies. The lady used a lot of big words when she was describing it so I didn't really understand what it did... Anyhoo they had a bunch of the Kentucky Derby horses there getting treated for stuff and I got to touch a TB stud that had earned well over $1 mil. Needless to say that's what got me interested in it. I know that I wanna do something that has to do with horses... anyone else know anything else about Equine Rehab.? | |

| They likely use the hyperbaric chambers to heal wounds. They are doing that with humans now too.. Sounds like a really neat place and very $$$$$$$$$$$ too.. That is a big problem with the average horse owner. Most of us cannot afford it. And, the ones that do pay through the nose for it. Would be nice to see funds for those how cannot afford it so they can help their horses too.. | |

| I've been thinking about rehab myself but it is so hard to get started! haha when you have $100k + in student loans you can't just go out and buy a place with all that stuff -- of course you could intern/and extern too and work for them but then you get stuck working weekends and holidays and you have to be in a market and I can only think of kentucky and florida as good markets (with rich people ) maybe virginia! I'm going to go to Border's and check out a book called HOrse Careers or something | |
