Heza Jodys Toast Scores $161,250 Delta Downs Derby(RG1)
VINTON, LA—JUNE 16, 2007—Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel hosted three stakes races on Saturday night. The restricted Grade 1 Delta Downs Derby was won by Heza Jodys Toast; the restricted Grade III $40,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes was annexed by Toastin Dash; and Go King Purna took the $18,500 Alabama Juvenile Stakes.
This year's Delta Downs Derby was another showcase for the talents of Heza Jodys Toast, who scored his fourth straight win of the season and his second stakes score of the meeting. The Jeff Acuna trainee also took the Louisiana Graduation Stakes at Delta Downs on May 12.
Under jockey J. R. Ramirez, Heza Jodys Toast broke well from the rail post position before quickly establishing a one length lead. At the finish line he was a half-length better than runner-up Patriot Act, while War Visions wound up another nose behind in third.
The Heza Fast Dash gelding, who is owned by Frank Cavozos and Warren King, covered the 400-yard distance of the race over a fast track in :19.982, earning him a 92 speed index.
Heza Jodys Toast earned a winner's paycheck of $72,563, which increased his career bankroll to a sum of $156,173 on four wins from nine starts.
Although he came into the race as the fastest qualifier, Heza Jodys Toast was the third choice of the wagering public and paid $7.20 to win, $3.60 to place and $3.40 to show. Patriot Act was worth $15 to place and $6.80 to show. War Visions returned $5.80 to show.
Competing the field were Heza Fast Classic, Six Toasts, Embrujos Devil, McM Dozen Dashder, Sky Patriot and Spectacular Streak. Hell Yea Iam Fast was scratched.
