| Todays weather was so irresistable I got to the barn kind of early to have the arena to myself. I got Chief saddled and got into the arena. I got up and right before I got my right leg over his butt he decided to start bucking. He bucked 5 or 6 times while I was still standing on the left side of the saddle. Instead of kicking out of the stirrup and bailing off I thought I could manage to get all the way on and catch my right side stirrup. So when I got my right leg over while he was bucking I missed the stirrup and he kept right on bucking. He finally got me off with one extremely hard buck. I noticed his head and neck were almost straight up and down when I started to come off. I think his face even hit the sand. I hit and landed on my right arm, and with in a split second I rolled over and looked to see where he was. I thought with what I saw those last few seconds that he was going to crash and burn on top of me. Naturally he was standing there looking at me like "Uhhh, oh sh!t". I was so mad at that horse. I laid on the arena floor for a few seconds thinking "God, who saw that". I got up with my reins still in my hand and whipped him, then I got back on him and we worked every inch of that arena. We did enough rail work, loping and turning into the fence, chasing cattle that he should be on the road to a finished cuttin horse. This is a horse that my 64 year old little 5 foot mom rides, thank God she didnt want to ride today. He is the one that is USUALLY quiet and does what is told, but today I guess he was just fellin a little goofy. Sorry about the book, just wanted to rant. I took pics of my upper arm this morning. Its ugly. Im a little sore, but nothing major. Im still going to ride today, it should help loosen me up, it always has. I got a nasty bruise on my knee, but I didnt take a pic of that because Im deathly white and I dont want to scare yall! This is on the backside of the top of my right arm. Thats what took the hardest blow. Look at all the pretty colors!

| I'm not really that scared either. I mean I am but then I'm not. I'm just scared that it's gonna hurt or that I'm gonna get hurt but once it's said and done I'm pretty much fine. | |

| Great job, B&B! And trust me, when you get older... you'll start thinking more about halter... HA! Too much riding on whether you get hurt or not. Let you in on a little secret that I learned, and it's real hard to make yourself do this... I had a gosh danged colt that was notorious for one day being fine, the next day acting like a bronc... finally, Anita came into the picture, and she was with me one paritcular day, he starts his mess, and she screams, KICK THE CRAP OUT OF HIM! I heard her, thought she'd lost her mind, hesitated, and thought oh well, what the hay...and just started kicking the blooming snot out of him, then he stopped bucking, was crow-hopping... she screams, WORK HIM IN A CIRCULAR 8 PATTERN... so I'm kicking just as fast as I can, and working in a circular 8... couple times there, I thought we were going to slide sideways to the ground....kind of scarey thinking back on it... and he just quit... he was foamed up, it was a hot day, and Anita made me push him till I decided to quit. She's always told me that's the key - YOU DECIDE WHEN TO STOP, not them! Had one more episode like that, but not as bad, and he never did it again. You were exactly right whipping the snot out of him, and then getting back on and working the dog snot out of him! Good for you! I betcha he thinks twice about that.... but you be careful! Every time I get on a colt that we've raised and Rick's broke out... I look them in the eye, and we have a conversation... The conversation goes something like this... so help me GAWD if you do something stupid and get me off, Lord help you when I get up! Never had a problem since... course they also know if I'm on the ground if they pull something stupid... Mom's coming after somebody's hindend! Tell ya another funny and then I've got to get to work here... when the guy was breaking out Kid, so long as I was out in the arena literally picking up rocks (found an arrow head - that was cool!), Kid was absolutely perfect. And he always kept an ear/eye on me. I even got to ride him once, and was the smoothest jog trot I'd ever been on, was already working off my legs... but when I went to the house - it was a whole other scenario... One time I looked out, and you could tell Kid was tired, he popped him in the butt, Kid went straight up in the air and landed back down in the same spot, guy came off, and that was that. Rick said the other day... well, since yu're not showing Kid anymore, you ought to ride him... uh-huh, yeah, and if the stupid sucker does something stupid, and I can get up at all... whatcha think's going to happen next! And Lord help if something happens to my hands - that's my fear. I work with my hands, and I'd be SOL if something happened to them! So I just keep my little happy nearly 50 years old (GAWD help me) on the ground! Sorry, that was just a "bit" long-winded... but you've got the right idea! GOOD JOB! | |

| Glad you're okay...... wanna hear a really good dismount story? I haven't shared this one yet..... wanted to make sure he was gonna be okay first! Anywho, this mothers day weekend, we had a police mounted patrol school to attend. The instructors of the school decide they are going to bring in a BIG, ORANGE, Coast Guard helicopter and hover above the horses at about 25 feet! Well, Dude, my hubbys young, lesser experience horse is the one we brought. So there is hubby doing good under the jet wash of the blades, horse standing strong, then WHAM! Someones hat flys off and Dude goes nuts, takes off bucking and running at full speed like a rodeo bronc and hubby lands smack on his head!. I run out and tackle him to keep him laying down and I tell him to open his eyes and look at me. He has one pupil WAY bigger than the other and I'm thinking great, head injury! He has no idea who I am, what happened, NOTHING! Long story short they life flighted him to the hospital and all turned out okay. Just a really bad concusion. SO............. next day, I get to finish the course with the horse. This is the shot gun series! Yeah me! It wasn't pretty at 1st, but he finally settled down and I was able to shot a handgun off of him! Again, glad you're okay!!!!! | |

| Good for you for getting back on it can be really scary! That bruise looks sore.. Ice it for 72hrs then you can use heat.... I had 2 bad ones one where the horse went over backwards with me.... can you say major reconstructive surgery? I remember thinking I was going to die and seeing my life flash before my eyes of course I was out back and nobody around so I lay there after being trampled doing a trauma assessment on myself and then got up and hobbled back to the barn... the MRI showed there were no ligaments holding my knee together and a cracked pelvis no wonder I could feel it shifting every time I stepped down the funny thing was nothing hurt at first... the other really bad one another time I was alone I was breaking a colt riding in a down nylon vest (don't ride in those anymore) 16+ hand colt he heard the vest rub on the saddle as I was getting off I saw the eyes roll back in his head and I thought oh no... I woke up face down and remember thinking where did the train come from??? (not really with it at the time as there were no train tracks in the arena duh) got the colt untacked and drove myself to the hospital--- he kicked me square in the sternum broke that and broke my foot as he kicked me a 2nd time going over backwards once again I didn't hurt until I got to the ER I had a perfect hoof print on my jacket and chest... I have learned from these experiences-- one Im not really very smart---two it really is better to ride with a buddy... esp when riding colts ---- both times I thank my lucky stars I was wearing a hard hat I believe it saved my life!!!! | |

| Uh oh I did it backwards. I used heat on my back first. That is what always gets sore first no matter how I land.
I know what you mean about a horse flipping over with you. I have a paint that did that with me.
We flipped over and my little foot (at the time) got hung in the stirrup, he then got up and walked all over me and took off dragging me down a white rock road.
I still dont understand why we still have him either.
Ive realized that us horse girls are tuffer than we look. I know of a few GROWN men at my barn that would have put their horses up and gone home to lick their wounds. Thats just my opinion though.

| nice bruise! hope you feel better! after your getting back on I think he is going to think twice about bucking with mom! I'm like 7cedars my trainer always tells me if she's gunna buck "you'd better ask her for it!" I also get the "grab the horn with one hand and give it to her" she always gives up before I do and then makes sure to be really really good for the rest of the ride | |

| You guys have some crazy stories! Holy cow, I think that is why my parents want a camera installed in our arenas, they want to be able to see if anything is going wrong. I think i've only fallen off a horse 3 times, and once I got hurt but thats all, I guess I'm pretty lucky. | |

| Sheesh, good job B&B. And I totally react like you did: WHO SAW THAT? Wildly checking around, haha. My trainer says if the horse bucks you're actually NOT supposed to grab the horn, because it throws off your upper body balance. Or something. And you shouldn't dig down with your heels too hard, because then you shoot off further. So, naturally, I always grab the horn and dig my heels down She also refers to the horn as the "oh s#!t handle", but that's another story | |

| When me and Anita broke out horses, we always rode in a deep seated smaller than usual saddle, with a low horn... now me, I like the big swells. Don't grab that horn, you tilt that pelvis like you're glued, literally, take a deep seat, lean back just a bit, and have two hands on the reins, and kick the holy crap out of 'em... and I mean, by GAWD, if they're going to buck, you're going to make them do it! Anita was so gosh darned good at it, she'd get those big ole thick reins we always rode with, and boy she'd go to whupping them on their shoulders, not a bit of air under her, huh-uh, nope, not a bit, hollering the whole gosh darned time, calling them everything but a horse! And usually with a ciggie in her mouth - yep, she could do it! Course all of us would just be rolling on the ground! And people wonder why I like halter horses... DUH! You guys are giving me the heebies! I've head my head busted open twice, my collar bone broken, by being on the ground and had my back turned and just flat got ran over... ooweee, I was PO'd about that... Lynn, Cindy's hubby, good Lord, have mercy! Cindy, your poor hubby's have the buggers now! | |

| Everyone knows about my daughter and how she had a couple of wrecks that landed her in the hospital....and nearly killed her......But there was one time I sure wish I had a video of her...........
I had won a BIG jackpot at a casino. I splurged on a handmade bosal with horse hair reins. I raced home....Had my daughter put it on my mare, and hop on....bareback. The mare loved it!!!!!!! My daughter loved it!!!!!!!! That mare had a HUGE stop on her......I told my daughter to lift the reins and ask her to stop. She did. Right at the bottom of her stride!!!!!!! That mare always stopped when she was told to.....Slammed to a stop on her front end!!!!!!!!!!! My daughter flew over the mare's head, did a complete sommersault, landed on her feet on the mare's left side, with her hands slightly raised. The mare flicked her ears, licked her lips, and squared-up perfectly!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder if that could be considered as part of the AQHAs new performance halter?????????

| Good job there B&B.. I am to old for that stuff. That is why I stay on the ground.. The last dismount I took was in the woods.. I knew when I got on there was a problem. I was just in a hurray and wanted to go.. So, we get out in the woods and this mare was really dancing around. I decided I had two choices here.. Let her run off with me and maybe land me on a rock and give me brain damage the rest of my life if I lived through it. Or, bale. I decided to bale. I hit the ground and pulled her over on me.. She stomped on me a few times then got up.. I broke my humerous right in half.. It took me a few months to heal.. I considered myself lucky. I never want to go through that again.. So, I stay on the ground and halter my babies.. I am very happy there.. I was like you when I was a kid.. But, when you get old you just do not bounce back that fast.. I am glad you are OK. | |

| haha Sheila said it! If your gunna buck I'm gunna give you somehting to buck about!! at my barn we get a lot of mean ones they aren't just QH's (the 17.2 warmblood we have now isn't going to be a congress trail horse anytime soon ) but he is awful bronky I think that's what you get when you wait until their 6 to break them! but anyway when holding on to the horn to don't grip it just push against it like a cutter when the horse bucks so you keep yourself back -- that let's you open up and kick 'em too! haha | |

| It seems like most of us have had some wild rides! Im just so greatful that I wasnt hurt.
The soreness is way better than it was yesterday. I think we have decided to send him to the trainers where Vegas is for 2 weeks or a month. Ive taken him as far as I can, and dont know where to go from here.
I know he can run, but every time I get him into it he bucks like crazy. Then he has these bronky spells just whenever is right for him.

| Shoot B&B- Ouch!!! I guess the worst fall I ever had from a horse was a little 3yo filly I had (she's one heck of a calf ropin horse now!!!)... I was WALKING in an arena...I ride split reins and she was a short little bugger (13.2ish)...well I had her gathered up turning in a little circle to get her bending better and WHAM, I think she stepped on the end of one of the reins and literally pulled herself over on top of me. We fell together and then as she was scrambling to get up I was trying to get up and one of her hooves caught me right around my left eye and then across my nose...broke every bone in my face and drove 2 inches of my nose INTO my brain (hurt like a sonofagun)...she also somehow managed to put a nice purple horseshoe print facing upward right around my tailbone (about 3mm higher and she would have cracked the tip off)...SEVERAL reconstructions later I'm doin well...that happened when I was 18 and I'm 24 now...the longest time I was off a horse was the year after that when I wasn't cleared from neurology to get back on... now I have a few screws loose and a numb scull Prally one of the FUNNIER times I've fallen off was when I was riding my little cutting mare...I was at the trainers and all of these other folks were out there watching and my mare was GETTING it...she was gettin down and dirty...it was awesome. so then she stops real hard and goes left and I lose my left stirup...so I'm fishing for that and we go back right so I lose my right stirup...I felt like a cartoon figure with both legs streaming out behind me with one hand on the reins and mane and the other on my saddle horn...two stops and turns later my butt hit the ground...my mare kept working the dang cow and I had one rein in my hand (and I BOUNCED back to my feed - everyone says I've got springs in my butt when I fall)...I SWEAR the look she gave me said "C'mon you dang slacker, I've got him here, why the heck are you standin over there?!?!?!?"... Hehe, OR one last story - I was a little tyke...decided to ride my sister's horse bareback...well...I wanted to get on like Jim did in Man From Snowy River...sooooo me being a whisp of a thing at the time I told Bandit to walk and I jumped up on him...well, I jumped a little hard landed on top of him and kept going...landing on the other side in a little heap! The things I've put horses through! | |
