PostSubject: Potential Purchaser?   Potential Purchaser? Icon_minitimeApril 20th 2007, 2:12 am

Alright, so I had a man call about my filly I had born on march 31st (I had an add on Horsetopia, and sold the mare, so I figured I'd use it), and have her for sale pre-weaning.... The add doesnt have much time left, but I have had a lot of interest on her, just no one has come out to see her yet. The more I watch this filly run, and turn hard, the more I see barrel racing in her future, and her running me to wins. So natuarally, I am contemplating on keeping her,.... not sure, but its a thought.

Anywho, the man who called wants to come see her on Saturday once I get off work. He is helping look at her with the guy who actually wants to purchase her, who is visiting from venzuela...... Shocked Shocked When I got the message, I almost dropped dead!

So now my question is, I am not very comfortable with selling my filly at weaning to be taken half way across the world! Also, they never asked me on a price, and I was thinking around $1000 for her, CAD of course, as I am in no hurry to sell and am not sure if I want to. So how Do I tell this guy I dont want to send her that far? Like it is an honour, but just doesnt sit well with me, especially at this point in my life. He didnt ask for price, or anything regarding that, all he said is how much he liked her, and wanted to come see her.

What do I do?

Well, let's see. If she does go to Venzuela, and you could make sure she doesn't ship till she's like 4 months old or something, say if they take her and show her, then your bloodlines would be known down there. Crap, that's a long shipping, but I imagine she'd fly, so what maybe six hours of a nice air ride - not so bad. I would find out what he plans to do with her - that may help you.

Next, when that guy in Colorado was looking at Scamp, and you know me, I'm not keen on actually selling him yet, unless it's to a show home, somebody told me, well, you advertised him, so you need to sell him. Told 'em flat, nope, that was my horse, I didn't have to do anything... comes from somebody telling me I HAVE to do something, ya know...

I will tell you this. One day I woke up and had darned near 40 horses, own daughters and sons of my paint stud... the daughters crossed well back on Kid, but you know, when you look at the numbers here at the end of the year, and your biggest expense, even above house payments, etc., is the feed bill, something's gotta give.

Although I would love to keep Scamp, I won't. I have his mom and dad. And maybe when Kid gets a little older I'll keep one out of him and Cool, but not now. I know if he gets sold to a show home, that it'll better Kid and Cool's other offspring...but it's going to break my heart when he leaves. Same way with your deal.

And maybe this buyer is actually from Venzuela, but has a place in the U.S. or the horse will be kept in the U.S. or Canada, who knows. Just ask some questions... if you don't feel comfortable, your horse, you do what you want. But be careful of getting into the deal where you're keeping all the offspring.

A weanling is too young to travel that far.. Do not take anything but cash and never take a certified check.. They can stop payment on those just like a check.

7C made some really good points.. You do end up in a mess not selling them if that is what you are breeding for.. The longer you keep them the harder it is to let them go... I have had as many as 16 at one time.. You cannot give them all the attention they need and that is not fare to the animal. Not to mention the cost to care for all of them.. Your life becomes consumed and there is no time for anything but taking care of all these animals.. I say this because I have been there and just getting things down now..

You have to consider what you will be breeding and how many more will come next year. I have no clue how many you have now? But, you should consider this and think hard about it.. Horses can and are an addiction.. Just ask me...

lol, well I leanrt right off the start you cant keep em all, or I wouldnt have sold my first baby I brought up.... that was hard, but continuing to feed her at that time would have been harder!

we have sold all of my studs offspring except for a late 06 baby, and of course the one we have now and the ones coming, continue to have inquiries about the one my mom kept (but she wants to show him to make some of her money back.... hahahahahaha whatever LOL).

I do eventually want a foal out of this mare to keep, she is my baby, my first horse ever, so that is why I am contemplating on keeping this one.... she's got everything she needs to be a barrel racer, and show.

I know also that if I want my studs babies shown, I need to do some myself to ensure they are shown. I have my foundered mare having her last baby this year, and I will keep that one no matter what, since she will no longer be here. Sure wish the sire was different, but it isnt, so oh well.

I am just nervous.... do they eat horsemeat in venezuela? I'm worried about how she would fly, etc etc.... She would be 5 months before I would wean her, then give her a half of a month to get used to being away from momma before I would let her leave my property.

I just dont know if I want to sell to this particular man, but I know if I had to, I could sell her.... just not sure if I should.

I would wait and see.. If they do eat horse meat over there they do not come here to buy weanlings for that...LOL..

Wait and talk to them and do not worry about it.. It may be just the right thing to do...

The Venezuela group buys a lot of horses from the Houston area at Rodeo time and they too never ask how much. They are buying them for anywhere from 7K on up to 15-20K.
Just FYI, they quarantine them in Venezuela for 30 days in small stalls, then truck them buy the bunch loads to wear they need to go. It's pretty hard them.

See this is what I am worried about! If my baby was headed to the states, I would have no problem! its not so far, and more than likely, if they are going to ship that far that she would be competed on.

like I said, I have had a LOT of interest on this filly, I even had a lady call today wanting to breed to my stud, and come look at her and him tomorrow!

My main concern if I sell her is an awesome home. Show home preferred, but will just a take a loving, caring home, and nothing less.

Maybe I should ask a bit more for her? since he doesnt know her price? I think I may do this and see how he reacts.... who knows, this might be my first $5000 baby Laughing LOL
