| Is it right beside his sheath? Do you guys have any bugs out - maybe he could have been bitten or stung? Might be an abscess...? How long has it been that way, or when was the last time you noticed it not being there? That's a bit scary...please let us know what the vet says. |

| We do not have bugs right now, its about 25 degrees out. It's my sisters horse and last I know I don't think it was there last weekend. We're waiting for the vet to call but who knows how long that will take. | |

| Better late than never...but..can you hose it down with cold water if he will stand for it or put a cold ice pack wrapped with a towel on his sheath if he will permit you to help with the swelling? Maybe also, a tab or two of bute to help with the swelling? Does it cause him pain upon urination? Have you seen him urinate at all? And this is out there..but..could he have tried to mount one of the mares, if you have any, and got kicked or even, got kicked while out in the pasture and everyone was out?
As everyone else said, I would get my vet out on an emergency call. I am one of those owners that I would rather be safe than sorry. If they don't call you back, call them again. I know my vet says to give her at least 15 minutes to get the msg, find a place that has decent reception and time to call.
Good luck and let us know please what is going on. Hope he is doing okay.

| Ok umm i don't think we can do the water thing since its like 15 degrees out now, but we might be able to do the ice pack. I have not seen him urinate and my sister said that he is standing weird. I have been gone all night so i didn't get to go check on him, but he seemed to be walking normal when i went outside.
Also, we have no mares, just one other horse, of which is a gelding.
O and the vet called back, they said that they don't know what it is and they aren't to worried about it i guess, umm they said if its not better to call on Monday and they would come out, or we could bring him there.

| Have you taken his temperature? Is the swelling hot? Does it appear to be fillled with fluid or can you feel a hard lump inside? Is it tender to touch? I'm sure the vet asked you all these questions. I think Grey Sorrel is right that bute might help with the swelling. | |

| I am pretty sure she hasn't taken his teperature. She went out and felt it before she called the vet, she said that it was like squishy but a hard lump in the middle?? | |

| If a horse has a temp they usually act different. Not eating, sluggish and just not them selves.. I hope it is just a good shieth cleaning. Those boys get dirty down there.. Tommy rolls in the arena and gets sawdust up in his.. I think he does it on purpose because he loves to be washed.. DORK | |

| Yah we are calling another vet. I told my sister she has to, she can't wait that long. We found one that is closer to than the other one but not as good. Actually we found 2. We are asking a trainer at school who has used them which is better tomorrow. | |

| Ok we called another vet, he said sounds like he's fine, if it's not bothering him we'll just leave it. If it gets worse just call back. Sounds like its just brusing up. (she did tell him it has gotten worse) SOO I guess we're just waiting. he doesn't really seem to be in pain though, like he does urinate, I had him walk, he was walking fine, and he was at the gate today pushing on it to come out. So yah idk but the other side is getting swollen too. | |

| Ok so the trainer/instructor said that she thinks it is a hernia, or looks like one. She gave us numbers to like 2 different vets and we called the "better" one and he can't come until the end of next week. my sister is calling another one later, since she thinks she has the wrong number. I'll update you if the vet come soon, cross your fingers! If it is a hernia it could get bad! | |

| Unreal that a vet won't come out! It's hard to tell just by a pic. My first guess would be a good sheath cleaning due to all the mud on him. Have you felt it? Is is a hard lump, a soft lump, is it hot, or does it move under the surface of the skin? | |

| I was out looking at property the other day and one place we went they had just gelded a 3 yr old.. His shieth was swollen as big as a foot ball. I bet the poor guy could not even pee.. He was standing in a round pen full of water and eating hay that looked like it was straw. The realtor and I were so PO'd about it. We asked what the vet said about it and they said it was fine. The vet never saw it.. I bet that horse has not been walked once since he was gelded or had any cool water on him. I have never seen anything like it.. I was pretty upset when we left. Some people should not be allowed to have animals period. | |
