| Went up to the local store, and saw on the first page of the newspaper, that a 14-year old boy lost his life on a 4-wheeler. Of course, he wasn't wearing a helmet. And people wonder why I don't have and refuse to have a 4-wheeler on my place!!!!! | |

| We don't have one either. My kids would love too, but it seems that everytime I start considering it, I hear of another accident. Our neighbors have 8 4 wheelers and they're always riding around. Of course, that makes my kids want one worse. | |

| I hear ya. And I can't sit there and watch them all the time, or I'd have to have a 4-wheeler to go with them to the back pastures... plus, every single one of their friends would be over here wanting to ride, and I'm not having that, especially since my golfcart looks like it does when they come over, thank you very much! ARGH! I know this past summer, Trent was wanting to go 4-wheeling at dark, and I told him he'd lost his every living mind. I have snuck to where he's riding at to make sure he's wearing a helmet... and he's the only one that has a helmet on...course he doesn't know that! | |

| I Love 4 wheelers, but, I've been riding them since I was about four, was even into racing for awhile, my boyfriend still races moto-x on his dirtbike. But, I have to say that no matter how careful or experienced you are, they can still be dangerous. Like the time I ran into a single stranded barbed wire fence, most of the damage went to my right arm, broke it in two places, literally ripped the muscle in my lower arm right from the bone. One of these days I'll take a picture, of the arm and the scars I've got all over from it. Quads are never really fool proof safe, but, when taught how to properly ride them, they can be a lot of fun. As long as you're careful, you can avoid a lot of bad things. In all honesty, kids will either get them from their parent's while they live at home or wait until they move out and buy one, and not have anyone around to remind them, "Hey put your helmet on kid." That was the #1 rule for me growing up, no helmet, no bike. | |

| Oh that's so sad.
We grew up riding them but we HAD to wear helmets! I still won't have one though! At least not until the kids are grown.

| I know a long time ago, when there was only 3-wheelers, Rick and his cousin bought the biggest there was and they used to take them out to these hills. I can't tell you how many times they flipped those things, but they did wear helmets. Those things just scare me to death. My bud was talking the other day, she used to have a barn across from a huge halter barn, and she said, about 9:00 or 10:00 every morning, she'd grab her a cup of coffee, her ciggies, and sit out and watch the goings-on at that farm, where they were working their horses on a 4-wheeler, and then watching the horse run around the pastures once they got loose. She thought it was hilarious. | |

| A local boy about 6 years ago was killed, wearing a helmet, he top over a hill on a path they had ridden and a tree had hallen during the night. His 4 wheeler hit the tree and he was sent flying threw the air, his head hit tree, split the helmet and his head. His friend didn't know what to do, the boy was alive, and didn't want his friend to leave, but yet he had to, to go for help. He promised he would be back, a 6th grader. Telling his friend NOT TO MOVE. When he returned the boy had passed away. He called 911 got the hurt boys parents, there was nothing that could be done. His brain had swollen out side his head from trama. The friend could not get over it and they had to take him out of school. He was in my daughters class. They moved. I always wonder about him. All he could say was, I shouldn't have left him. And my son wondered why I wouldn't let him go off on one of those things. | |

| Doesn't it actually say on a sticker on these 4-wheelers, that no one under the age of 16 is allowed to ride it or something or another? | |

| TripleJ, so what's the five breeds of dogs? I'd heard a Saint Bernard was the worst... now they've added more. | |

| Yeah I had a friend die in a fourwheeling accident.
My dad bought me a fourwheeler last spring, goes fast and manuevers easily.. I wasn't being careful and jumped the road and smashed a ditch, hit my head on the front bumper thing, SMASHED my ribs into the handelbars and somehow broke them, and hurt my leg, but i was wearing a helmet... I always wear my helmet. I hurt my ribs again the next day..and the week after hurt them again and my leg when i spun a "shitty/donut" wayyy to fast and it turned on its side and i put my foot down which proceeded in getting it smashed under the foot rest...yup they're veryy dangerous...

| Lordy, Sip... okay, no more 4-wheeling for you! goodness. So Trent comes home with his girl last night, with a borrowed 4-wheeler in the back of his truck. Mom, we're going 4-wheeling tonight... I said, the heck you are. Rick asks him, where are you going... he says just right here in our pastures, not at dark, Mom, till dark is what I meant to say. Okay, then that's fine. They came back in right before dark, mud everywhere - I knew he'd take her through all that water. So he goes on to explain that he went in the very back creek, which I haven't seen in a while, and Trent says it's "this deep", Mom. I look at his girl and say... you know how many water moccasins (sp?) are down there... she got a real funny look on her face, and we all busted out laughing. Needless to say, if he does this again, I don't think she'll let him take her down to the back creek. Then Dillon decides for his 16th birthday, he wants a 4-wheeler. Mom, I'm a better driver than Trent, I'm not stupid... sure, of course, you are, uh-huh, yeah, uh, no way!!!! | |

| The boys have killed or seen I don't know how many water moccasins down there in that back creek. It's just flat creepy back there between the creek and the fence line - I mean, real creepy. You just be careful, Sip, you'd be causing me a heart attack! | |

| I almost bit the big one years ago with a 4 wheeler, or at least by gods grace got away uninjured. We had a woodburning stove when I was living in NY we had 51 acres and 15 of that was woods. Soooo I would go out and use the 4 wheeler to drag back trees to use in the stove. I was going through the hedgerow as usual dragging a tree and there was like a major dip to it and the tree behind me got *stuck* I had the 4 wheeler on the upside of the ditch like area and was gunning it <stupid I know> well let me tell you the tree broke loose when I had that thing reved up and the thing shot up and forward like a rocket. I fell off the back while this thing launched into the air. I was on my back and watched it fly straight up and thank god as it was coming back down to crush me I rolled out of the way. They are dangerous no doubt about that. Now I was an adult and used bad judgement that almost got me killed or seriously injured there is no way in HE double hockey sticks that my children will ever ride one. |

| O my gosh that is sooo scary, I probably wouldn't have been able to think that fast. I'm so glad you didn't get hurt!
BTW: I just got in from fourwheeling through all the water on the farm, it is like 57 degrees out! I was soaked head to toe and started to shiver so I came in, took all my clothes off and changed, hopefully I'm not too sick tomorrow!
