| This topic comes to mind because I just sold a mare yesterday. She sold without issues, well broke beautiful kids horse, for $2500. Not too bad, Im happy.
But I was looking for a 1-2D barrel mare on the net, and the prices have not come down at all... So I looked at some other simply broke horses to see what I could find... I did not find one under 3K (that was sound anyways!).
So my question is, are you guys noticing a change in prices? if so, how much?
Here it seems nothing is going down in price if its well bred/well conformed. Its only the fuglies that go for dirt cheap, or the grades with no training. But pretty much they have always gone that cheap.
Also, I just paid $3.50 a bale for gorgeous timothy mix hay, and $4 for alfalfa/timothy. However apparantly the price is up, which to me is weird since our gas prices aren't much different than last year, and we did get rain (just depends on where you live.. We got little to none, and the guy down the highway had mass amounts). So I guess we're paying $5 a bale this year...
Man am I ever so glad we're down to 11 horses, 8 being mine (and one being leased out).

| $5.00 a bale is a fantasy here!!!!!!!!!! I just paid $250.00 a ton....and it's not great quality. People are giving away horses around here. Some are young...some are older. Some registered, some not. | |

| mid grade as far as breeding (by that I mean some big names on the papers maybe great grandparents) well broke well put together horses are dirt cheap here hay is also fairly cheap here this year.... horses sales be ready to give them away unless they are big name bloodlines with great conformation and points or money earners (mares need to be proven or big names). | |

| idk about prices around here, I think they have stayed about the same..maybe a little bit up but not much! hay here i'm still not sure about i think its about $4 for it to be delievered and stacked, and those are like 90 pound bales. Those same bales cost $12 in AZ, so we have it lucky up here now that i moved back! | |

| Well - in TBs prices are pretty rotten this year - the farm just had one sell in Maryland - she is probably a 30-40k horse and she sold for 5k... have another one going through tomorrow - they want 20k for him, it isn't looking good...these horses have GOOD stud fees and are bred really really well....the market just isn't there ----------- That said...I had a lady contact me today about my 18yo gelding who isn't listed for sale...I also have people contacting me every couple of weeks to see what I know of for sale...and they have the $$$$$ to spend...
My prices have pretty much stayed the same - I do know that "stock" horses that aren't finished or bred really well or have something else really really going for them are cheaper than anything right now (Free-$200-$1000)

Alfalfa/Timothy Mix 3.50 Alfalfa 4.00 I wouldnt own an unregistered horse at this stage of the game. Sorry Dont mean to hurt anyones feelings, but it cost just as much to feed a reg. As it does an Unregistered. Those papers can put them up a tad bit, and I mean a tad bit, on the sale value of a horse. Also cant understand why someone would breed them, to sell the foals???? Horses with preformance points are bringing decent money still. Even aged horses. Halter horses seem to be getting hit the hardest. But I think that goes in stages. One year its one thing the next year its another. Pleasure seems to be the thing right now, and to sell one safe enough for youth or select is a hot item, as long as it can compete at the breed show levels. But look at it this way In about 5 years, with all the NOT breeding going on, it will level out. Id like to think it wont take that long, but that is my Un- educated guess..

| We never buy just a bale of hay or what ever.. So, I could not tell you what a bale of hay cost. We are paying 300.00 for a ton of orchard and 275.00 for a ton of alfalfa.. Now, keep in mind this is Oregon and we are rich with water and fields of nice green folage.. I call it goudging just like everything else.. As far as the price of horses go. They are giving away very well bred horses with all the lines we talk about. Some even have very accomplished show records.. What people are asking for them and what they get for them are not the same. If someone wants to sell the horse or needs to sell it they will likely take a much lower price then what they wanted for it. If it's a case of needed to sell then a bird in hand is worth 10 in the bush.. If they are smart enough to figure they will just have more invested the longer they keep it they will let it go no matter how much it hurts. I talked to someone who has been around the business this weekend and he thinks the market will bottom out next year then pick up the year after. Most the people I know are holding off on breeding next year. I will breed for one paint futurity baby and that is it.. I just brought my pali colt home and will advertise him for sale. I do not have to sell him and could keep him and stand him in a few years. There are no nice pali studs in the NW that are well bred and HYPP NN. I will have to invest in him if he stays and get some points on him. I will do that if I have to. I would rather sell him though. | |

| I was chatting with a friend in Utah and was told someone we all know of (will not mention any names) breeds a bunch of her mares. If she thinks the foal is a prospect she registers it. All the others go to the auction as grade horses.. You can open the QH journal anytime and read about this ranch and how wonderful they are. They stand a stallion with a $10,000.00 breeding fee attached and you have to ship your mare to them. These are working horses, not pleasure or halter. So, as Lynn mentioned the back yard breeders who breed grade horses and junk are not alone. People are just figgy stupid as far as I am concerned and once again, AQHA supports this. They could care less.. Makes me sick. I bet they even brag about the breeding at these sales to get more for the junk they are throughing away.. | |

| I paid 3.50 for a 55-65lb bale of grass hay, some were going for $5-6. Luckily, the hay was only a few miles away from where we store it, so that cut down on hay help time and gas. It still comes out to be around $1,500 a year for hay when all is done. Not bad considering what others pay! | |
