| Went out to play with Tucker this morning.....He tried to body-slam me on the gyp-line.....Threatened to kick me twice (he's never done that before) when I was brushing him. Hubby said "No way you're getting on that horse"!!!!! He was wonderful at the trainer's place.....He just has no respect for me. Know anyone who wants a free horse????? | |

| It was trainer #1's vet who wanted him..... Trainer #1 owns/is intrested in only cutters. Trainer #2 said he'd love to have him....Til I called him today. He says he has one for sale himself. It's crazy!!!!!! He acts like a perfect gentleman when I ride him while he's at the trainers!!!!!!!!! Just like riding a machine!!!!!!!!!! I suspect that it's not just ME.....But the fact that he's here at home....Where he was a frolicking baby. He thinks of me more like an attendent or servant. | |

| I think you're making a responsible decision... A horse, no matter how much we love them, is not worth getting seriously injured. And you have really exhausted all efforts to try and get him rideable for you. I can only immagine how dissapointed you must be, I know you've put a lot of time into him. But ya know what? There is another horse around the corner that is already broke and will love you all the time, not just when you're scratching his belly. I truly am sorry about this though, I was rooting for it to work out... | |

| I can tell you what I'd do with that sucker! The lounge whip, the water hoses, something would get strapped all over his buttocks!
A couple of weeks ago, Scamp took the hide off his neck - stupid idiot, danged near decapitated himself... went out there to put medicine on him, and he had that butt sticking at me, and I thought, uh-huh, yep, okie doke... got out of the stall, went and got the lounge whip, waited for him to do it again, and got him in a corner and beat the living snot out of him... I'm not tolerating that from any freaking animal!!!!
The next day Scamp did it again, except this time, acted like he was going to kick me... I won't tell you what I picked up, needless to say, he hasn't done that mess again...
You should always, ALWAYS be the alpha mare - you rule, no if's, and's or but's...no argument, and if they even look like they're going to do something... well........stupid them!!!!

| Get you a lounging whip and rub his legs with it. See if he trys to kick it, if he does, Let him have it. I mean tie him up, Me I hold there lead rope, so I can cotrol the head. Saddle him and tie his head around and try it. Id not let him get by with it. | |

| I think she's pretty, from what I can see in the picture it looks like she has a decent hip and neck... and she's BROKE. That's a big plus, a nice investment that's not going to require trainers and more trainers. And you're right about the whole pretty thing... You can't ride "pretty" just like you can't ride "papers" lol... Sure is nice though, when you get a pretty one that is just right for you. Let us know how it goes when you see her in person... Oh hey, if you don't mind, could you forward me the pics you were sent? I'd like to see more of her | |

| My husband just looked at the pics of the mare....He says. "No way"!!!!!! I don't know....He may be right. I can see that she's a lot shorter than the 15.1 they say she is.....Not a horse I can show, despite her breeding. | |

| If you are going to get rid of him you still need to kick some A$$ and send him the message he is not going to act this way. Anyone who wants to even look at him you will have to show him. You can keep your distance and make your point. You are letting him rule you and that is a big no no.. I had one like that and I told her I would beat her bloody and when she dropped dead I would still beat her bloody.. She stopped that and all I ever did was whap her with a nylon lead over her whither. She hated that .. We had an understanding. That was she would die if she did not change her behavior PERIOD.. She was HUGE and could spot a sucker a mile away.. She never messed with me. | |

| Hubby says I have too much invested in him to give up now. He says Tucker stays. I've been thinking about the way I relate with Tucker. Somewhere along the line I have forgotten that he isn't a baby anymore. I still baby-talk at him. I still give him back rubs and scrathes in special places. In his mind, I'm the lowest herd member. I'm like a baby colt, clacking my teeth at him. I rode an arab stud for many years. I was the only person he liked. He'd let other people ride him only if I was right there. (my sister still has a scar on her leg) So I asked myself, "why"? Because I was the boss. I beat the snot out of him every time he peeved me off. Sometimes snarling at him wasn't enough. I don't think I've ever really smacked Tucker. No more Ms. Nice Gal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | |

| just my 2 cents worth...
Bullying a horse can work for a time... earning respect lasts longer.
dont beat the snot out of him, simply when he turns his butt to you, think what a dominant mare would do. Using even a crop (lunge whip whatever) as an extension of your arm, give him ONE whap on his bum (heck I even add in the squeel LOL).
Some horses you can bully, and they withdraw, which still wont get you your respect you need to show this animal. You need a partnership, but need to prove to him first you are worthy of being his partner.
You want him to respect you, not fear you IMO. Fear brings out the same danger at times that lack of respect would.
Take on the dominant role, ALL the time. You MUST be consistant, or you wont gain the respect you need.

| I wish I could post a "Tucker session" video so you could see what I mean. He's never turned his butt to me, or offered to bite. He stomps his hind feet, threatening to kick. On a gyp-line (his ears are always back) he'll bolt sideways at me. A new trick...He doesn't want to be bug-sprayed. He bolts backwards, threatening to rear, and bolting forward again, trying to run me down. He uses his body like a battering ram. I've never let him win....But I do have to be careful. If I were to break a bone, it could take ages to heal. | |

I really wish I were closer to you to help you out. I would offer help anytime! However, I was just dealing with this on a rude 2 yr old welsh pony stallion. The owner is in la-la land and expecting me to show this obnoxious pony for her.... Regardless, we had some late night sessions, and after deciding I was in fact lead mare and there was nothing he could do about it, he went wonderfully for me. No whoopings neccesary Tucker sounds like he acts simmilar in behaviour, which does suck for you. When you act to reprimand him, your timing has to be absolutely flawless, but of course you can't just whoop on him. My first suggestion is some round penning time. Push that sucker hard away from you, thinking of what a dominant mare would do (even down to the same rigid posture), Dont let up till he shows submission! When he shows signs of submission (Lowering of head, licking and chewing), stop driving him away. Drop your eyes to the ground, and Turn your "flank" to him instead of your normal "drive" position of facing him. If he doesn't come to you within a few minutes, drive him away again. Repeat the process until he comes to you and will follow you around the round pen with ease (and a safe distance). This would be your base to start on gaining his respect. I dont care what horse it is, what lines it has, every horse speaks horse.. Insist on space while working with him, partly by driving him away from you when he gets too close, he will soon realize he is only allowed in your space upon request... Just like a dominant mare. Please keep us updated, and keep safe!

| Nope, nope, nope, you DO NOT need a partnership with this horse!
Alpha mares don't care about partnerships, they rule, period end of story, and if you don't believe it, go up and pester one and see what happens.
If he's in your space, no matter what's going on, he gets a good whupping... And it's a super fast whupping, DO NOT LOSE YOUR TEMPER, and then go on doing what you were doing before.
If you don't have a set of stocks - figure out how to get some! Put that sucker in when you're brushing, fly spraying, whatever...
And you quit talking to him like a baby - criminey sakes alive! If he were your child and he acted like that, what would you do? Just let your child run all over you? No... You'd whup the snot out of him - or at least I would!
You need to get the book BODY LANGUAGE OF HORSES and read it! You need to be able to pick up on what he's doing before he does it. As far as pulling his foot up...we can't see that, but he may nto be doing what you think he's doing... at this point, I think you're so afraid of him, that you can't read his right body language.
I'd suggest at this point, taking him back to the trainer and letting the trainer sell him, no matter what hubby says, unless hubby wants to get out and take care of this problem....

| Yah...I know all the submission signs, etc. He round-pens/lounges like a dream...til he decides not to. He can jump my Powder River panels like no-one"s business. (those are the tall ones) I've adopted and trained 3 BLM mustangs....Never had trouble like this. The trainer is coming over at 1:00 today...He's going to come in the other end of our driveway, so Tucker doesn't see him. Then he's going to hide amongst the patio furniture and watch me work with him. Tucker doesn't simply decide to attack me for no reason. I can do anything with him, til he decides he's not entertained anymore. I've often wondered if he was properly gelded. My vet REALLY wanted me to keep him a stallion. | |

| see its just my opinion here... but you do need a partnership with any animal your working with. Just my opinion. Thing with dominant mares is no they dont neccesarily want a partnership with the other horses.... to an extent. They all rely on her for safety so they abide by her rules, But she also does rely on them because without them, she is alone and unsafe.... And if they really didn't have a partnership of sorts, they wouldnt be a herd (keep in mind we're talking working partnerships, not business partnerships ). HOWEVER, she is also not asking them to obey as she ride's them across the pasture doing flying lead changes in figure eights. So its a whole different part of the pile, but from the same pile. So while yes, you need to be the dominant "mare" to an extent, you also need his willingness to participate with you, or you will never have a good show horse. period. he needs to respect you, not fear you. Just MO. | |
