So... We always check for ovulation after breeding... and on up to the heartbeat - after that we leave the mare alone usually...
Sooooo - what I want to know now is - Who here palpates at about 7.5 months?
We did with my mare because she really doesn't look preg - but we got the old Thumbs up!
My father-in-law didn't do either of his mares because they are both the size of a house...(and they are due AFTER my mare)

Mine is about 65 days out and just looks a little round around the edges...doesn't look preg in the pasture though - she just looks a bit plump...thus the palpation...wanted to make SURE we didn't need her under lights

I have done that in the past. The vet told me the paly mare was in foal for sure. Well, she wasn't and it cost me a lot of money to add her to the breeding report and pay the INF money out. I did not this year and both mares look like they are. Some can fool you and it is a good idea to check it out if you are not sure..

When I A-I I have them checked at 18 days and thats it. Mine get as big as a house so you can always tell with them. When I live cover I dont even check them. They always take.
