Future Stars Step Forward In Hobbs America Futurity Trials
HOBBS, NM—SEPTEMBER 29, 2007—Ray Herring’s fastest-qualifier A Real Shaker easily scored his first win and led a group of possible future stars into the finals of the $260,000 (est.) Hobbs America Futurity from the five trials contested on Saturday afternoon at Zia Park. The Hobbs America Futurity and the Hobbs America Derby will be run on October 14 at Zia Park.
Trained by Roy Marcom and ridden by Sal Martinez, A Real Shaker pulled away to easily win the final trial with a :19.383 time for the 400 yards. It was the Moon Shake colt's first career win from seven starts, but he had shown futurity-class speed by qualifying for the Rainbow Juvenile at Ruidoso Downs in July.
Second-fastest qualifier DM Shatanooga, trained by Carl Draper, has the breeding to be a top stakes horse. The brother to 2005 world champion DM Shicago, also trained by Draper in 2005, prevailed by a neck over Noconi in the fourth trial. The Separatist gelding was timed in :19.436 and Noconi was timed in :19.465.
Like A Real Shaker, DM Shatanooga scored his first career win in his Hobbs America Futurity trial in his fifth start.
Noconi, a Mr Jess Perry gelding trained by 5-time national training champion Paul Jones, closed well to finish second and is still a maiden from five starts.

Vital Winner Tops Qualifiers in Derby Trials
Jones will have two prime contenders in the $137,000 (est.) Hobbs America Derby with Twoforthedough and The Crawfish.
Those two Jones trainees had the second and third-fastest qualifying time behind Vital Winner, winner of the first of two derby trials in :21.600 for the 440 yards.
Vital Winner came into the trials off a second-place finish in the Grade 3 All American Gold Cup behind Ketel Won at Ruidoso Downs on September 1. The Easy Winning Jet gelding, a winner of seven of 14 starts, was third in the Grade 2 Mile High Derby at Arapahoe Park on August 12 two starts ago.
Jockey Freddie Martinez was aboard Twoforthedough and The Crawfish for Jones and hand rode each of his mounts into the derby finals.
Twoforthedough finished second as the 4-5 favorite behind Vital Winner in their trial with a :21.742 time. The First Down Dash colt raced to fourth-place finishes in the Grade 1, $230,000 Ruidoso Derby and the Grade 1, $448,000 Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs last summer.
The Crawfish won the second trial in :21.781 at 19-10 odds. The Mr Jess Perry colt qualified for $1 million futurities at Los Alamitos last year and was third in the Rainbow Derby.

Futurity-Derby Doubleheader At Zia Park On Sunday
HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 10, 2007—There aren’t any Sunday afternoon baseball doubleheaders, but you will find a twinbill at Zia Park next Sunday (October 14) with the Grade 2, $265,459 Hobbs America Futurity and the Grade 2, $134,628 Hobbs America Derby bringing out some of the sharpest Quarter Horses in the Southwest. First post time is 12: 15 p.m. with the futurity running as the sixth race and the derby as the fifth race on the 11-race program.
The 400-yard futurity is led by fastest qualifier A Real Shaker and second-fastest qualifier DM Shatanooga.
A Real Shaker, trained by Roy Marcom Jr., comes off strong efforts in his latest two starts. He raced to a second in his trial to the Grade 1, $2 million All American Futurity and then a daylight Hobbs America Futurity trial win. The Moon Shake colt led five qualifiers to the Hobbs America Futurity into the finals with his trial victory with his fastest-qualifying time of :19.383 for 400 yards.
A Real Shaker starts from the second post position with Salvador Martinez aboard.
Trainer Carl Draper has won two of the latest four All American futurities and he sends out DM Shatanooga, a brother to his 2004 All American Futurity winner DM Shicago. The Don Moler and Fredda Draper-owned Separatist colt has finished on the board in four of five starts and won his Hobbs America Futurity trial by a neck over the late-running Noconi.
DM Shatanooga starts inside of A Real Shaker in the rail post position with Oscar Hernandez riding.
The derby fastest qualifier is the sharp Vital Winner, who faces two dangerous horses from the always-deep stable of 5-time national training champion Paul Jones.
Vital Winner was second to the older Ketel Won in the All American Gold Cup and that win by Ketel Won secured his champion older horse of the meet title at Ruidoso Downs this summer. The Brad Bolen-trained Easy Winning Jet gelding then won the first of two Hobbs America Derby trials in the quickest time of :21.600 for 440 yards.
C.D. Lewis rides Vital Winner with the sixth post position.
The Jones-trained Twoforthedough was second to Vital Winner in their trial. The First Down Dash brother to 1996 world champion Dashing Folly was fourth in the Grade 1, $230,000 Ruidoso Derby and the Grade 1, $448,000 Rainbow Derby.
Jones also sends out third-fastest qualifier The Crawfish, winner of the second trial. The Mr Jess Perry colt raced in two $1-million races at Los Alamitos last year and was third in the Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs.
Jockey Freddie Martinez qualified each of the Jones derby horses and chose to ride The Crawfish. Defending national champion jockey G.R. Carter Jr. picked up the mount on Twoforthedough.
The Crawfish starts from the seventh post position and Twoforthedough has the first post position.

Giles Takes Futurity, 'Crawfish Wins Derby at Zia Park
HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 14, 2007—Trainer Wes Giles career-defining year continued at Zia Park on Sunday afternoon when he sent out 19-1 longshot Gone To The Mountain to win the Grade 2, $265,459 Hobbs America Futurity.
The Giles stable’s star Wild Six won the Grade 1, $260,000 West Texas Futurity and the Grade 1, $625,000 Rainbow Futurity earlier this year.
“It’s been a great year,” said Giles.
Ridden by Giles regular rider Tony Guymon, Gone To The Mountain raced the 400 yards into a head wind in :19.42 to defeat 3-1 favorite Noconi by a neck. Always Cumminatcha was two lengths back in third.
The Panther Mountain colt joined the Giles barn two weeks before the Hobbs America Futurity trials.
“After we got him he got sick and we’ve just been working with him,” said Giles.
Guymon added: “He hadn’t been breaking well, but has really improved since the trials. Wes is great working with horses and this colt has learned what it [racing] is all about.
Owned by Clyde Woerner, Gone To The Mountain won his maiden in his sixth career start with the Hobbs America Futurity victory. He came into the futurity off a third-place effort in his trial behind fastest-qualifier A Real Shaker and All American Futurity finalist Fear This Feature.
DM Shatanooga, the 3-1 second choice, lost all chance at the start.
“He reared up when they kicked the gate,” jockey Oscar Hernandez said of the full brother to 2005 world champion DM Shicago. “I lost control and he just went to the rail.”
In the Grade 2, $134,628 Hobbs America Derby, David Vargas’ The Crawfish easily raced to his first stakes win in his final career start with a professional performance under jockey Freddie Martinez.
The Crawfish raced the 440 yards in :21.60 while facing a stiff head wind.
“He broke super and can run on the end,” said Martinez. “It was another day at work for him.” Martinez also qualified fourth-place finisher Twoforthedough for trainer Paul Jones and opted to ride The Crawfish.
The Crawfish, the 9-5 favorite, easily handled the field, finishing a half length ahead of second-place finisher Angelina Ballerina. Fastest-qualifier Vital Winner, the 2-1 second choice, finished third, another half-length back.
The Crawfish showed his potential for Jones a year ago at Los Alamitos Race Course in Southern California when he qualified for the Grade 1, $1 million Golden State Million and the $2 million Two Million Futurity. Jones then brought the strapping son of Mr Jess Perry to New Mexico and he finished third in the Grade 1, $448,000 Rainbow Derby.
Otillo Ramos’ Angelina Ballerina, a Hawkinson filly, kept her consistent record intact with her second-place finish. She has finished in the top two in nine of 15 career starts.
