Schvaneveldt Handicap Lures Strong Group Of Runners LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA—SEPTEMBER 7, 2007—Los Alamitos Racing Secretary Ron Church was pleased with the nominations to the inaugural $50,000 Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap to be held at 400 yards on Friday, October 5 at Los Alamitos Race Course.
"Twenty-two horses nominated," Church revealed. "The quality is strong and the list features a lot of outstanding horses."
The Schvaneveldt, which is named in honor of the Hall of Fame trainer and Los Alamitos' all-time leading conditioner, is open to horses that have made at least three starts this year in the Northwest and Intermountain regions. Church also released the weights for the Schvaneveldt. He's made four horses the co-highweights at 125 pounds. They are: Lucille or Earl Pepper's Bedazoom; Braker, Vessels and Pitchers' Classy Make N Money; Kenneth or Vicky Elison's Fast Red Leggs; and Vessels Stallion Farm LLC's See If I Care. The other six horses weighted into the race are: Hodge Money Crunch (124 pounds); Diamonds Tiny Effort (123), Fames First Wrangler (123), In Between Dreams (123), Sold On Special (123) and Splash Talk (123).
"Los Alamitos is proud to have the opportunity to host these talented runners from the Northwest and Intermountain regions," Church added. "It's a group that should deliver an exciting race and will represent their regions proudly."
Here’s a quick look at the 10-highweight horses scheduled to participate in the October 5 Schvaneveldt Handicap:
BEDAZOOM (Idaho-bred brown colt, 5-year-old by Shazoom out of Jessi Cheng) Owner Lucille or Earl Pepper; Trainer Bill Hoburg: Winner of three of seven starts in 2007, Bedazoom ran third against Snowbound Superstar in the 870-yard Red Cell West/Southwest Challenge.
CLASSY MAKE N MONEY (Utah-bred sorrel gelding, 6-year-old by Takin On The Cash out of Oh Classy Chic) Owner Braker, Vessels & Pitcher; Trainer Jay Pitcher: Has only made five starts since January of 2006, however, he’s hit the board in all but one of those outings. Won a handicap race at Wyoming on July 1 and then ran third to See If I Care in another handicap test there.
FAST RED LEGGS (Idaho-bred chestnut gelding, 4-year-old by Red (TB) out of Ronee Christina) Owner Kenneth or Vicky Elison; Trainer James Glenn Jr: He’s fresh off a neck victory over Fames First Wrangler in a handicap race at Les Bois Park. Stumbled badly when facing LDS Dash For Dylan in the Bank of America Northwest Challenge Championship two races ago. He’s won seven of 13 career starts.
SEE IF I CARE (California-bred gray horse, 4-year-old by Fishers Dash out of Shirleys Signature) Owner Vessels Stallion Farm LLC; Trainer Paul Jones: A winner of nearly $40,000 in his career, See If I Care ran a combined six times at Les Bois Park, Elko and Wyoming Downs. Won two of those six races, including a handicap at Wyoming.
HODGE MONEY CRUNCH (Utah-bred sorrel gelding, 3-year-old by First Down Money out of Easy MacKay)Owner Todd J. Thurston; Trainer Jaime Gomez: Has hit the board in seven of nine starts this season. Started the 2007-racing year by winning four straight races, including the Bitterroot Derby at Les Bois Park. Finished second in the Boise Derby in his last start.
DIAMONDS TINY EFFORT (Utah-bred sorrel filly, 3-year-old by Proudest Effort out of Twaynas Diamond) Owner Bob Alan Pence; Trainer Jim Hanson: Has earned speed figures of 100 or higher in four of his five starts this year. Won a $29,700 stakes final at Wyoming by 1-˝ lengths in last race. Won his trial to the Bayer Legend Northwest Derby on June 16 before returning to finish fourth in the Northwest regional final.
FAMES FIRST WRANGLER (Idaho-bred sorrel gelding, 5-year-old by First Wrangler out of Sold On Fame) Owner Gary or Jeralyn Messenger; Trainer Bret Vickery: Finished second to Go Man Go Handicap nominee LDS Dash For Dylan in the Bank of America Northwest Challenge Championship final on June 30 at 19-1 odds. He ran second to Fast Red Leggs in his next start back. Faced multiple Grade 1 winner Startlet Hawk in his first start of the year at Los Alamitos when finishing seventh in allowance test on August 26.
IN BETWEEN DREAMS (Kentucky-bred chestnut filly, 3-year-old by Bridlewood out of Neon Flame)Owner Ron Moosman, S. Hoffman and D. Smith; Trainer Bret Vickery: Well-traveled filly ran fifth to Checknbac in the La Pacifica Handicap at Los Alamitos on March 30. She began her sophomore campaign at Sunland Park in January. After her Los Alamitos stopover, she travled to Wyoming – where she won an allowance race – before finishing the season at Elko.
SOLD ON SPECIAL (Idaho-bred filly, 3-year-old by Special Effort out of Sold On Fame)Owner Gary or Jeralyn Messenger; Trainer Bret Vickery: Sold On Special has won three of seven starts while hitting the board in each of her other four starts. She’s won the Dixie Downs Derby in Utah and the Idaho Cup Derby in Boise this year. She also ran third in the Bayer Legend Northwest Challenge and second in the Bitterroot Derby to Hodge Money Crunch.
SPLASH TALK (Utah-bred filly, 3-year-old by Splash Bac out of Katies Victory) Owner Jerald Davenport and David J. Payne; Trainer Chad Giles: This winning machine has four triumphs from five starts this season. She’s won races at Laurel Brown, Utah, Wyoming Downs and Elko, Nevada this year. Her only loss was a runner-up effort in a $34,000 derby at Elko on Labor Day, September 3. In her career, she’s won seven of 14 outings.
