| Those Born 1930-1979 READ TO THE BOTTOM FOR QUOTE OF THE MONTH BY JAY LENO IF YOU DON'T READ ANYTHING ELSE-----VERY WELL STATED TO ALL THE KIDSWHO SURVIVED the1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !! First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes. after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhikingAs infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags. Hope this works I tried to clean it up a bit. Doesnt like this color.Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because . WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING ! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K. We would spend hours building our go carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat rooms....... WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.They actually sided with the law! These generations have produced some of the best risk takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! If YOU are one of them . . CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own goodAnd while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were. Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?! quote of the month is by Jay Leno:'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks,'Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of allegiance?' | |

| Ok, ok, so I know I am a little young for most of this - BUT... We didn't have a TV growing up, we read, started our own clubs, etc... NONE of us (there are 6 mind you) have ever been arrested or gotten into "real" trouble...only a couple of us were ever kicked out of class and only 2 of us dropped out of high school (Laura and I). ALL of us got a BA or BS (4 from Texas A&M - ag ecomonics, biochemistry, rangeland ecology and mgmt, finance...1 from Emory - psychology and russian...1 from Harvard - government)... 2 of my siblings already have at least 1 advanced degree and 1 is starting his masters in about 2wks...my other brother leaves for Moldova (Peace Corps assignment) on Sept 9 and will be gone for 2 years...
We ALL had livestock (sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, beef cattle, dairy cattle...and yes, horses)...we got up every morning and fed, watered, doctored...we showed on a local and state level (sometimes national)...we judged, we were never allowed to have academics slip...but it was never an issue - it was just a known fact that our grades would be good...that we would bust our little tails and get it done...
Hehe - my mum took a LOT of crud for letting us miss school and drop out (the two of us that did anyway)...etc...she's one awesome lady! | |

| YOUR RIGHT! Your Mom did a super job, Doesnt sound like she let you sit in front of a game/tv/computer. She taught you values and morals. Tell her I said, she has done a fine job, and has every right to be proud. | |

| That is so true. I let my kids out to play on our farm and people ask me who's watching them. Watching them? We don't have much machinery running around. The worst they can do is cut themselves on barbed wire or fall out of a tree. As long as I can hear them, they're probably fine. When I was younger, we pretended we were birds and made nests on top of sheds. Fell off of one and split my lip wide open. Washed my face off in the trough. Which was made out of an old Coke cooler. I didn't go to the doctor, and low and behold, never got sick. We had it good back then. We were actually allowed to have fun. | |

| That is all so true. I guess I'm still that way with my grandson. If you need a band-aid then you need stitches. I only get two channels on my TV. He got his BB gun when he was 5. There are rules with it. I never locked the guns up around my kids. They knew if they touched they got their butts tanned. They are now in a gun case butt still not locked. At school the principle would spank you if needed. And yes we did say our prayers at lunch time. No child abuse there. Just look at us, we all turned out OK. Yup, That's the problem today. | |

| Boy, how true all that is! I don't know about you guys, but sometimes you'll hear me say, "I'm not in agreement with their parenting skills." I see some of these kids out here that it's really not the kids' fault, it's the parents - they literally just let them run wild or sit on their arse. Every single boy that's come to visit, knows there's work involved here, whether you're staying the afteroon or the night or a week, whatever, and they all want to come back. A couple of weeks ago, my middle sister's son stayed with us for a week, and I had to teach him how to crink a waterhose. Now, my sister grew up the same way I did, and then she was moaning, because he couldn't mow, that she guessed her daughter would have to, and she's taller than me - that she'd never mowed.... I thought, oh, Good Lord, and I told my sister she was raising city slickers and a bunch of wussies... well, the look on her face was priceless... HA! | |

| I Hate to see all the Negitive in the world. We have to look for the positive and trust. Its a shame that the simple times have been set aside and that our children and grandchildren are taught fear your neighbors, If your parents spank you, call the police, you have rights. And so forth. I told the school, Ill sign a paper and you have permission to spank my children. They said nope! Cant do it! Grrrr. Shouldnt we as parents make that judgement? | |
