Hi
Im so sorry to hear that.
Our boy got Lymes disease when he was a yearling. He had to have injections everyday for 7 days then a 3 week course of tablets,70 a day.
Every horse is differnet on how they react but with ours its ruined him,he has now a very low immune system. We are hoping when he matures as he only 4 this year that his immune system will kick in and he wont be susceptable to everything.
Many horses go on and lead very normal happy lives and you would never know they had the problem.Once theyve got it theyve got it for life too.Interestingly though where we live the vet said if he tested the Wild New Forest ponies that 90% would have it.Its just how they cope with it thats the problem. Many things lie dormant in our horses without us realising.
Our poor boy had a thorn lodged in his jaw and he ended up on 90 tablets a day as his immune system couldnt deal with it like a normal horse.
It can effect there joints, gives them slight arthritic appearance, can swell the joints. There are many, many side affects but you may be lucky.
Bear in mind a tick only has to suck on a horse etc for 2 hours and your horse can be affected. All it needs is the one tick carrying the disease.
