PostSubject: SMS help   April 8th 2008, 1:46 pm

Brennen is working on his mare, Sandy and having a bit of trouble. Since I really don't do SMS or halter, I thought I'd ask some of you for advice. His main problem is his pivot. She's switching pivot feet about 3/4 of the way around. Any suggestions to help this?
The other thing is setting up. He sometimes gets her hind legs a little close together, plus it takes him a while. So for this is it really a case of practise makes perfect?
His walk and trot are pretty straight and she trots right off, so no problems there. And her back is getting better now that he knows how to keep her straight.
Any help would be much appreciated.

For the pivot, make sure you keep her moving forward. If they get set back too far, that is when they switch to the wrong pivot foot. She should be moving her left hind foot forward throughout the turn, so if you see that foot getting too far back then pull it up. He should be standing up near her eye/throatlatch, makes it easier to keep that forward motion going.

The set up - Yep, practice makes perfect! Set her up *every* time you stop her.

Hope this helps! Smile
