Epiphysitis

What can you tell me about it and treatment plans?

This is the palomino we just got from my neighbor. Once he got out on grass, well, look at the pics, you can see what happened. I called the vet and he said stall rest, some hand walking, grass hay and bute. I thought I would ask you guys if you've ever successfully dealt with it and how.
Don't mind the muck, it's been raining here for days. The pics are in my catch and sacrifice pens.

I've never heard of a baby getting epiphy from grass....My step-sister and her husband (they raise/train/run race horses) have had it a few times, but it came from feeding a baby to grow too fast. They always just put the baby in a stall/small pen to restrict movement....and "starved em down". They would feed plain grass hay and plain salt.

Are you sure it's epiphy? This looks more like OCD....

What in the world is a sacrifice pen?

Stall rest and MSM. Is he getting grain at all? The minute I see the babies double clicking in the joint I hit them with MSM.

No grain any more and he's on stall rest. He's not real pleased about it, but that's just too bad. I'll have to look into getting MSM.

Jet's first baby (1995) fractured his pelvis when he got stuck under a fence. We gave him MSM.....If he even suspected it was in his grain, he'd refuse ti eat it. I decided to use a big syringe to squirt it into his mouth The MSM wouldn't disolve in water....I experimented with yogurt and a few other things. By accident, I found that it would only disolve in mollasis(sp).

The colt never really recovered. He appeared healthy...Walked with a funny gimp....Never got over 13 hands. Very beautiful BS pally. His dad was a Ricky Taylor grandson....Gave him to a friend. I think he was eventually put down.

I've been doing lots of research and everything I've found says stall rest and low protein diet, which is what I am doing.
You know, I bought those colts as resale projects. Sure, the palomino is my favorite due to his personality, but I would likely have sold him anyway. Now I have a colt who requires stall rest and careful management. It's not the money I'm worried over, it's the fact that this would have been prevented had he been fed properly at the previous place. I wasn't feeding him heavily or anything. Just trying to put some weight on an underweight yearling. It's just so damn frustrating.

I have never had a problem getting mine to take the MSM. I just put it in the grain with their vitamins and they clean it all up.

Do you guys get MSM from the vet or the feed store?

I get mine at the feed store....You have to sign for it here.

Yes, you can buy it from a local feed store. Have you had his Seleium levels checked.

You know, I felt the same once upon a time when I was actually picked apart ON the site for wearing a grad dress on my mare (they pulled it out my photobucket). However, no she doesn't troll, people send it to her, and others "bring it up". The lovely Sheree did that for me here, handed my photo to fugly herself.

However, I see things a bit different now. To a very large degree, I agree with her. While I may not approach things the same way, or neccesarily agree with everything, she does hold a point. I talk with her on another forum along with Reining Fan, and she is quite nice.

Really, I dont think anyone else in the world has solely caused the same amount of rescued horses as this lady... and THAT is something to talk about

It is too bad that this lil guy is having issues... But from reading, once he does gain weight back... isn't there and age where they no longer do this type of thing?? I do not know enough about this condition.....

For $7000, I'd rather have a used luxury car. It will run many more years than this filly, and won't flip over on me while having a HYPP seizure.

Guess she would call my healthy Yearling Filly GROSSLY OVERFED. Im not an HYPP FAN. Everyone knows that but... just because this yearling was carring weight and does not have its ribs showing, does not mean its GROSS....

I personally didnt think that mare was grossly overweight, maybe carrying a few extra pounds... but not obese by any means.

idk, in these parts even, you know in order to win a halter class at breed shows or even on North Country Circuit, you\'re halter horse must be moderate to fleshy... I do worry some, say with my colts on putting on any extra weight than being moderate, but if you know what you\'re doing and have never had problems... I\'d take what she says with a grain of salt.

ETA: but some people have kept their babies so heavy they have ruined their legs for life... i think that is what she is trying to educate people on?

Not sure about your area.. But, you can mail order MSM real cheap through Vallley Vet Supplies. I would have the vet come out (or do it yourslef) and give it and A, D & E shot. It's thick and not so much fun to give.. The A, D & E shot can and does work over night.. The vets will tell you this has nothing to do with it. But, for some strange reason it does work. I have used it my self and I swear by it..

Order some DAC CMZ paste and give it one full tube for 5 days.. Mineral imbalance is the norm for this. Too much of one and not enough of the other causes this. The nutrients that are not balanced are: Calcium, Phosphorus and Protien. I used to use Osteo Form that I bought though Valley Vet to prevent this. It's a calc/diphosphous blend.

From your pics this looks to be a serious case and you must get on it right away. The just hay is a good start. But, will not cure it. If you cannot get it turned around you will have contracted tendons and a nice pasture orniment..

Got to love that CMZ Paste, I gave my last two tubes to a friend that just had a colt born with bad legs and in two days on that stuff it was amazing. He still has a ways to go but but what an improvement

I dont think her intent is to insult others... Her main objective is to educate... she just doesn't sugar coat nothin.

Sometimes I strongly disagree, sometimes a wholeheartedly agree... but I do enjoy reading it when Im on to check my emails.

I can certainly understand where you're coming from. I know on a simple person to person basis, I can be so upfront and truthful a lot of people cannot handle it, but with horses I *MUST* be nearly a whole different person. I dont say nothing in public, learnt that the hard way when I was a bit younger.

There is a huge difference between not sugar coating something and being completely disrespectful. Fugly fits into the disrepectful category, in my opinion. I have a book here, from equine science, that completely covers every conformation fault there is. It also goes into explaining how proper conformation plays a role in athletic ability, how poor conformation impedes.

It does not use personal pictures of someone's pet as an example. It is not dissrespectful. It is free from personal bias. Science is educational, a judging seminar is educational. You do not educate someone with over bearing opinions that are laced with rudeness, even if they are based of factual evidence.

I know people who have had their horses picture placed on the Fugly Horse of the Day. I've talked to them on the phone while they cried, saying they loved that horse more than anything.

I have never in my life insulted someones horse that way. I will point out flaws, when asked. I just think that if she wants to "educate" people, she should do it with her own stock or illustrations, not someone's back yard pet.

What I also think about is this: What if someone just getting involved in horses stumbles along that site, would that not turn them off to horses and horse people in general? It only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch. To me, that whole situation is the bad apple.
