We are sending our babies to a sale Sept 27th. Or that's the plan right now.
Their birthdays are:
Duncan, March 3rd
Tim, March 13th
Carrie, April 24th
Missy, June 4th

I plan on taking one mare out of the pasture at a time, leaving the foals with their buddies. Had less stress doing it this way before. They have a creep feeder, plus will be brought in and worked with on a daily basis. Missy won't even be 3 months till September. Taegan would like to keep her, she's the bay tobiano pinto, but she's likely going to leave.
I'm also selling off some of the mares. Anyone know of someone who'd like a mare that will feed ANY foal you give to her?

The June baby is too young to wean. I never wean until they are at least 3.5 months old and that depends on if they are ready or not. 4 to 4.5 months is ideal. They should be weaned and settled into life on their own. It is very tramatizing to do it any sooner. Course, that all depends on how you feel about them. I just do not do it to mine. Others do, not me.. No

They should be halter broke and have a mind going. Otherwise they end up being treated like livestock. I know that is what they are. This is why my husband tells me I am not a very good farmer.. Those babies are my kids.. ily

Mine are all halter broke. I would never sell one that isn't. As far as the pinto goes, I haven't entered her in the sale yet. I'm hoping to sell her off the farm, that way I know she'll be mature enough.
Duncan is ready to wean now. His dam is letting us know. Plus, we have someone coming to look at her, so we'll likely wean him this week. Tim is pulling his dam down, so I'll likely wean him right after and leave the fillies for now.

The market is really tough here. affraid I have no idea what yours is doing. scratch Down here you would not get much more the 100.00 to 150.00 for a weaner.. If I was young and had the room I would keep mine until they were 2 and start them. We just cannot do that. No . I just sold this one for 1000.00 and he wasn't for sale. This one and a really nice yearling filly will be going to sothern Mexico on the gulf These guys showed up with cash and I let them go.. Sad They wanted my stallion who is not for sale and could not afford the price I put on him. If they had the money they would have got him too.. pale

I just sold to "grade" weanlings (not even technically weanlings yet...) for $700 each to a lovely guy who would buy all of my horses if he could.

However, when it comes down to my APHA breeders trust and futurity nominated filly, I've only had 2 emails on her as she's listed for 2K... I personally think thats a low price, but I like her so much I don't mind if she doesn't sell Laughing

I am weaning the stud colt at a little over 3 months (he still needs to be gelded before he goes... that is if they don't board him and their other filly here for the winter) because he is sold, and so is his dam (different people). I've also finally been able to pull up my TB's weight *While nursing!* Yea! Laughing ... so my pally filly gets to stay on her longer this year. The one filly is not even a month, so not ready to wean, But weaning at 3 months is fine as long as the conditions warrant it. ie. Getting independant, solid on eating hard feed, good weight, excellent health etc... And having access to a creep feeder is just extra!

We had a creep feeder and my silly mares broke in to eat all the nummy grain. Twisted Evil

Taegans mare just crawls under the creep feeder panels. Rotten witch. But we're keeping her filly, so we just keep them in a different area.
I guess I was wrong on the sale date. It's the 12 of September I've been told. I'm weaning Duncan today.
Brandi, you should try selling him my babies, I'll give you commission. Heck, I'd even deliver them at cost. lol

YUP, sometimes you get those that have to be weaned early and pray they come through it. I find the later weaning makes for a better horse.. But, I do 3.5 to 4.5. I like to do more then one at a time so they have a buddy to play with. riding

I normally wait until they are six months but I thought with this colt I would wean earlier since he's a chunk butt. I was getting ready to do it and my friend called and said your colt is only three months. I was thinking he was four months so now I'm gonna wait. I think my mind is going.

I almost always wean at 3 1/2 months. Now the oldest one might be 4 months or 4 1/2, but the youngest would have to be at least 3 months before I pulled them. I always pull 2 or more at a time...

I'd suggest on that youngest one, to wait...but then again, he/she might be fine for the sale.

One snotty stud colt I pulled when he was just barely 3 months old... I'm trying to think which one that was - can't remember, but he was a freaking snot!!!!

When mine are about oh, 2 months old or so, I start feeding them milk pellets... oh, criminey sakes, Kay - what's the name of that mess? Boy, they'll come on big time with that stuff!!!!!

Whenever I breed Jazz, that'll be a freaking mess, only having one... good Lord - and no, I'm not buying a danged goat!!!!

I waited till today and weaned the two older colts. One's momma doesn't much care and neither does her colt. Whiskey on the other hand is running around like an idiot and screaming and yelling. Even went through a fence, but she can't get to him. She was kicking at him every time he would try to nurse, but separate them and the fun begins. I forgot how bad she is. And her colts are always bad too. They are in a pen with two of the mares who still have their babies with them. They are trying to nurse and getting a bit of tuning in. Gave them grain and lots of hay, so hope there are no problems during the night.
I am waiting till next weekend to wean Freckles' filly. Freckles is going to a clinic and is used to being away from her foal while being ridden, so at least Robin wont have her momma to call to. I'm not sure what to do about Vamp's filly. I think I will wean her with Robin. She's really starting to pull Vamp down, we've increased her oats a pile lately.

Calf Manna is hard to find around here. But we're looking. So Brennen & I took some horses down to my Grandparents to ride today (they have MUCH better trails), and brought Whiskey, the fence wrecking witch with a B. We also brought Freckles and left her filly at home. We were planning on bringing her home with us, but my cousin who rides and absolutely loves her is there, so what better oportunity is there to have 2 or 3 days with no screaming mommas? So 3 are off their mommas. Tomorrow Vamp's filly gets stolen on her:lol: .
Wade figured we'd wait till the day of the auction, he's worried about them losing condition till then. That's why I'm pouring them feed idiot. Who likes to buy a baby thats stressed from going to a strange odd place in a scary trailer, who misses it's mother? But that's the way he and his dad have always done things.

Nothing wrong with it. I just found other things that will do what I need without adding so much protien. Basketball

I know some of you back on that side of the county like the real high protien feeds. Might be a difference in where the alfalfa grows. Question Like the Buckeye. If I used that stuff (can't get it around here) my horses would all have legs blown out. Might just be an enviroment thing. scratch It was just too much for me.. Rolling Eyes
