I dont really know what color he is. Some tell me Bucky and some tell me Choc. Pali. He has dark color on his legs, ear tips, dark roots and his tail has black in it. But he's so peachy color.

Lynn is right about the red dun. Just that dorsal missing.. scratch

Here is a shot of the mare I mentioned earlier as a newbie. Sure looked like a red dun..

Here she is all grown up.. Not red and not brown.. Her sister is the same way. No dorsal anymore. scratch

he does!

Very cute boy you have there! :0)

He's not red dun though... No dorsal stripe. (if he carried all the other bits of dun factor, he might convince me though Very Happy )

Looks like a light chestnut to me... I have a bright chestnut mare as well... turns out to be a gorgeous color!

Bluejay that babe is very cute as well! Looks like a mock dorsal stripe to me though, especially since she doesnt have it anymore Very Happy

Ok, what what about his, Dark legs, Black in his tail, and you can see the tips of his ears, the darken in there. Maybe we should ask, what color is his sire? Is his Dam a Bay? She looks to be. From the head shot? Or is she Dun? Is the creme gene involved? I too had a baby born with a long dorsal out of a Palomino. I was told, By a color board, that a Dorsal can not skip a Gene? Mine shed off to be a Liver Chestnut.

She had the widest strip all the way to her tail. Oh, she was cute, and found a new home.

Hmmm. Definitely looks like a red dun without the dun factor...kind of weird. I'd be voting for palomino except for the dark tips. What color are the mare and stud??

He does have some black in his tail and some black long hair in his mane above the withers and looks like his legs will shed off dark. Can Pali's have black in their tails or do they have to be blonde?

Paly can have some black, gray and red in their manes and tales.. We had one that was born a little off colored. He had red in his. He is a really pretty tall paly now. Choc paly will be darker on the bottom half as well. He sure is cute.. pray

Mr Yella Fella does not have a white mane and tail by the way.. Dancing One of his fillies that is local is paly with brownish mane and tail. She is has almost a copper gold color to her.. scratch

Well being out of a cremello, That takes care of Chestnut. Has to be a creme gene involved. I agree with Blue Jay, A pally can have black in its tail, But a Buckskin can have alot of frosting too. As well as a Dun.

Hey we could take bets! lol!

PS I LOVE YOUR BACK DROP! What a VIEW! Shocked

I think I'm going back to thinking Buckskin. If the legs shed off choc. then I'll hurry and change my mind again. Laughing People keep sending me pics of Choc. Palis but thier tails are really a choc. color not black. Its the underside of his thats black. I would get a pic but you have to have two hands free around him. He can be so nice then turn and try to give you a love kick. OH How I love fillies!

You know Blue Jay I looked at Leanns foal (Jag) and he had dark going up the backs of his legs . Just like my colts so now I'm changing my other mind and going with Choc. Pali. I'm just waiting to see blonde hair in the mane.

Yes they were right, Dun cannot skip a generation, and if a horse has it you see it (unless of course they are a double dilute... but get them wet and you can see it too). Dun is a modifier, like agouti or roan. You take a bay horse you give it dun, and you have a dun or "bay dun" as it is sometimes called. They will look like a buckskin with dun factor most times. If You have a red horse, and give it dun, they are a red dun, and look usually simmilar in color to mare's baby she posted..

You add other modifiers and gene's it gets a little more complicated.

Without seeing a full body shot of the baby you posted T-J, I would call him a bay (it looks like his mane is black?). Its actually surprising how many horses are born with counter shading and mock dorsals. Since its hard to tell, usually you look for atleast 2 "pieces" of dun factor on them, and a dorsal stripe should be one of those.

Palomino's and buckskins can be quite tricky... heck it all can be. Like I have a colt who was born bright buckskin (tobi), and when his winter fuzz came in was nearly all black and white. I had him tested and genetically he is a buckskin, So since that little bit of help, we know he is a sooty buckskin (he's shedding out much lighter now).
