Older Mare in Foal Empty
PostSubject: Older Mare in Foal   Older Mare in Foal Icon_minitimeFebruary 8th 2007, 4:26 pm

Sugar is 23yrs old and has 2 more month before she foals. I have been
wondering if I should break down her feeding to 3 feedings per day.

Do you guys have any thoughts on this? I've always heard the bigger the foal gets, the less they should eat at one time??? Question

Unless she has a history of trouble foaling or is way over weight. I wouldn't. The dam of my stallion was 24 when she foaled and did fine, he was a big boy too. By the way she has had 2 more foals since then... Very Happy

Her weight is good. I thought I remembered someone saying that you
should break an older mares feeding down into 3 feedings in the the
last couple of months.

Hmmm, maybe I just feel bad becasue she acts like she is starving! pig

I do up my broodmare's alfalfa hay the last couple of months just a bit. Nothing real big though. But they stay out in the pasture until a couple of weeks before they foal, and even then, during the day, they'll go outside.

If you have some good hay, I'd up her hay. We've got grass growing like crazy here - you?

The grass is okay. Not its best yet, but she gets plenty of good hay
and about 4 scoops of feed per day. She was at 3 scoops per day (not in
foal). I forget what it comes out to lbs wise?

We have no grass here, so they get all the hay they want. Check and see if you selemium (sp) in your soil if not you may want to give extra so your foal will not be wind swept. There is never anything wrong with feeding 3 times a day, Wish I could. It's much healthier. Bet you can't wait.
PS. (Headsup) Cindy don't worry, your sweet to. Like a Star @ heaven

I feed the same but add 2lb LMF development A (any mare and foal mix will do) to the grain ration. I start that about 4 months before they foal. Then when they are nursing I double that. They also get 2lb oats twice a day, alfalfa and all the extra stuff I add once a day.. My older mare (21) eats when and what she feels like. She drives me crazy. scratch

My mares look like they were never PG when they foal. Too bad that does not work for people.. LOL Sad
