PostSubject: 4-H Questions   April 13th 2007, 12:19 pm

Since we live up in Canada, I was wondering if you guys have some different rules down there, so I have some questions
1. Do you have to have only 1 project horse for the year and use it for achivement day and any regional/state shows you have, or can you use more than 1.
2. Are speeches mandatory where you live. Our province has them optional, at discretion of the club.
3. What rules do you have regarding helmet use and proper footwear? Our club members are not allowed on a horse at a club function (lessons, clinics, parades we go to as a club) without a helmet on.
4. What show classes do you have? We don't have WP in Manitoba, cause it is supposed to be judged on the horse, and that is not what 4-H is supposed to be about.

I think it may vary by club:

They don't require helments. As a matter of fact, in western the kids have to wear a cowboy hat.

Speeches are also optional here.

As for the project horse. They are allowed one for the project. They
can have other 4-h horses for non project events like speed events, WP
etc.... The project horse is subject to sale at the end though.

We just got the helmet rule enforced here this year. It used to be mandatory that you had a cowboy hat on. Now you can't be mounted without a helmet.

Speeches are optional

At our 4-H you can have as many horses as you want, but you can only used the points on one of them for going to state, etc.

In Pennsylvania 4-H, anyone on a horse must wear a helmet. It's been this way ever since I started out about age 10. Proper footwear is also required.

You are only allowed to show one horse. Exceptions to this are if you have a mini or a draft that you show in driving, you're allowed to also show a horse or pony. In the production division, I think you can show as many as you want.

I don't know anything about required or optional speeches so I'm guessing we don't have that! haha.

We have Showmanship, HUS, Equitation, WP, Horsemanship, Trail, WR, Reining, Saddleseat, Working Hunters, Eq over Fences, speed events, and Driving. Lots of stuff! But you can only show in one division. You must choose either Hunt Seat, Western, or Saddleseat.

It's interesting how 4-H varies so much in different places. Smile

4-H is way more relaxed here but it is also very competitive. You may show two horses at fair in as many diviosions as you can handle!! We have all types including dressage,, jumping, contesting, pleasure showmanship, halter , etc. You do not have to qualify for state but very few people from our county go because it starts the day after our week long county show and everyonwe is beat! Helmets are mandatory in contesting and jumping.
I'm not sure what speeches are either and I don't really understand the definition of a project horse. Do you put them up for sale at the end of the year in some sort of 4_h sale, because that doesn't happen around here. Each club holds their own riding meets in the summer to get ready for fair but all other meetings are indoors and purely informational. The ribbons and trophies are gorgeous and the county show is a blast! Most kids look forward to it as the highllight of summer no matter how many other shows they show in! It is amazing how much 4-H varies from state to state an I didn't even know they had it in Canada!

everyone on a horse must wear a helmet

only one horse per year -- even if it dies you can't show another horse! (has happend to a girl)

we have english and western divisions with fitting and showing (pretty much showmanship) pleasure, eq/hms on the flat, and trail, there is always sit-a-buck but it is just for fun. we dont have bareback classes some shows have jumpers and hunters almost all of them have crossrails.

haha we only have 8 counties and two of them combine for a show so there are only 7 shows and there aren't points or anything and there isn't a state competition just The Eastern States exposition has a 4-h fair and it is people from all the new england states

CT is so weird lol!

Here in NC you have to have a helment on.

no speeches are requierd.

we have all differnet classes, we are alot like PA...all the same classes.

I think you can have 2 different horses. when i was "horseless" i showed 2 different ones, and nobody ever said anything.

Kentucky 4-H

Must wear Helment when mounted on horse. Have to wear boots.

In Kentucky, in order to show at State you must qualify. You have to show at your area level. The top 80 % get to go to state. You have to show in Showmanship. You can pick 3 more classes, the more you show and place in the better your chances are. We have Walk Trot for those not loping yet, 9/10 year olds.

We have classes like Ponies broke up in two differant Heights, and differant age groups of Riders.

We have NO halter classes except for a yearling.

Speed events
Showmenship (The year my daughter won it there was 135 in her class.)
Reining ( 10th out of like 24, Shocked she lucked out alot of them blew pattern) Her pleasure was low and slow...
Western pleasure (2nd place, 120 in her class)
Horsemenship (4th out of 98 ish)
She was like, res high point that year.
Western riding, I think.?

The classes are huge, So that is why then have to qualify

One project horse, but we have classes the Following classes
Yearling halter
2/3 Western pleasure
Roping

These classes are invitational classes. The horse can ONLY be shown in one of these classes. no other.

No speech in not required, But Kittie Kicked up, She has 2 or 3 state championship. She Can really run that mouth! Idea
English Div.
In hand/ Showmanship, HUS, Equitation, Saddleseat, Working Hunters, Eq over Fences, Dressage. But you can only show in one division. You must choose either Hunt Seat, Western, or Saddleseat.
