After Caffiene died, Brennen needed another 2 year old for the 4-H Young Horse project, in order to achieve the year. We thought about getting him one, but he ended up deciding to take my 2 year old filly by Gun and out of Freckles. He started way behind the others, as I didn't do a whole lot of work on her other than halter breaking and manners.

Here they are for her first saddling.

Here he is lunging her.

And line driving her.

The first day he was a little out of control but went both direction for me no problem. When going clock wise he fell. The arena has nice soft footing so he did not get hurt. Embarassed himself though. Now he will not go clock wise. Not even if you have someone trying to drive him that way. He stops, turns an looks at you then walks up to you. She's always kinda been like this, but because Brennen didn't lope her a whole lot, I never really realized it till we started working on getting ready to show. I even got on her and tried. I got it right 1 time out of about 7. Brennen got it right a few times, but we need to really work on this. Any suggestions?

The other thing is setting up. He sometimes gets her hind legs a little close together, plus it takes him a while. So for this is it really a case of practise makes perfect?

He is really on the lean side right now, I just bumped his feed up again after he had a bunch of time off. He's super tight (as in, as tight as he could possibly be) in his abdomen, his neck is a little flabby right now (which I am working on with sweating and he's wearing a jowl sweat 24/7). When we brought her home from Missouri, she was barely green broke so she has really come a long way. This is her first time being ridden with bell boots (she just got re-shod today) and only her second time in the shank snaffle. She's a 2-year old, for anyone who doesn't know.

ok. heres problem number one.

(there are alot more coming....my friends have troublesome horses!)

a friend of mines horse, (who is a gaming horse) refuses to pick up the correct lead. she will only pick up her left lead, and no matter how many times we try to stop her, lift her shoulder and mover her out, she still will pick up the left lead!

the only way we have found to fix that, is to circle her, but of course, you cant do this in a WP or WR class!

any suggestions?

Getting Colt Ready For The Show Ring....

I was wondering if any of you (and I'm sure you do ) had any tips for helping a colt shed out and get conditioned for halter classes...?

He is a 6 month old colt, big boy, but quite hairy... his first show should be in May or Late April.

What are some tips to getting him into halter shape, and getting rid of all of his winter fuzzies in time for the show?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

All my other horses are shed out almost slick. Should I shave him or

what? He sweats like a mad dog. Today it was 80 degrees and he was hot.

I feel bad for him. And he looks scruffy as all get out!

Using a golfcart for conditioning

I'm curious about using the golfcart for conditioning and rather than interupting the other thread , I thought I'd start a new one. We have an electric powered golf cart on our farm but I've never used it on the horses. Exactly how do you pony the horses with this cart. Do you need two people? How fast do you go? Have the horses ever gotten loose? How do you hold on to them? Am I sounding stupid yet?

OK halter people here is the MILLION $ question.

I have halter fit horses for a long time. The problem I have here is my stallion. Most of you have seen him.

This is my problem. I will not and cannot feed him alfalfa or heavy grain. I need to get him fit to show. Now, those of you who have seen him may think he is fit. And, he is. I just need to firm him up without gaining a ton of weight and need to maintain what he already has..

I have a few things in mind but ...
